Chapter 5 - My Mother at 2:13 A.M.

Eleanor admitted entering the building.
She said she went because Gideon called and demanded the documents be destroyed.
"Did you destroy them?" Mara asked.
"No. I couldn't open the locker."
Julian stared at his mother. "You knew Dad forced Nora out."
Eleanor looked down. "Not at first."
"When did you know?"
"After Maya was born."
The room went still.
"You knew I had a daughter."
"I knew Nora said the child was yours."
"Did you tell me?"
"No."
Julian sat down because his legs would not hold him.
Maya had said Eleanor visited their apartment.
Eleanor admitted it.
Twice.
Once when Maya was two. Again when she was four.
"What did you want?" Julian asked.
"I offered Nora money to stay away."
"Did she take it?"
"No. She gave me letters for you."
Julian looked at the six returned envelopes.
"Did you deliver them?"
Eleanor shook her head.
"Why?"
Her voice broke. "Because every year it became harder to admit what I had done the year before."
For once, no one tried to call cowardice protection.
Mara showed Eleanor a photograph of Gideon leaving her townhouse two nights earlier.
"You still see him."
"He handled Richard's affairs."
"He threatened Nora."
"Your father directed him."
Julian's voice hardened. "That does not erase Gideon's choices."
Mara's phone buzzed.
Brent Cole was talking.
He said Serena hired him for surveillance only. When he refused to break into Nora's apartment, Gideon sent another investigator, Martin Kells.
Kells was the man with gloves.
Hours later Nora disappeared.
Before Mara left, Owen entered with a laboratory report.
Mara had arranged an expedited paternity test with Maya's advocate and Julian's consent.
Probability of paternity: 99.9998%.
Julian did not smile.
A number could not restore years.
Then he noticed Maya's legal name.
Maya Nora Bell-Blackwood.
Nora had given Maya his surname from birth.
Maya looked at him. "Does this mean I have to live here?"
Julian immediately shook his head. "No."
"Do I have to call you Dad?"
His chest tightened.
"No."
Maya nodded. "Good."
He deserved that answer.
Then Mara returned to the doorway.
"We found Kells's motel room. Nora was there."
Julian stood.
Julian asked Maya's advocate to explain the DNA result to her without using words like claim, heir, or inheritance. Maya's first question was not about money. It was whether her school records had to change. Her second was whether Nora would get in trouble for keeping the truth from him. Julian answered no to both before any lawyer could make the moment complicated.
Eleanor listened from across the room and finally seemed to understand the scale of what she had helped steal. It was not a seat at a table or a surname. It was ordinary things: birthday cards, doctor appointments, terrible school concerts, fevers at two in the morning, and the right to be present before a child had to ask why you were absent.
"Was?"
"She escaped."
