Chapter 4 - Locker 317

The old foundation building smelled like wet plaster and forgotten paper.
Julian had not been inside for twelve years.
The basement records room still held rows of metal lockers. Most doors hung open.
One did not.
317.
Maya's brass key fit.
Inside was a cloth document pouch, a digital recorder, three photocopies, and a sealed letter marked: FOR JULIAN - IF MAYA REACHES HIM.
Mara photographed everything before anyone touched it.
The first document was the transaction that supposedly proved Nora stole $302,480.
A second page showed the destination bank rejected the transfer. The money returned the next morning.
Richard Blackwood then reclassified the same amount as a fraud loss reserve.
Julian stared. "There was no loss."
"Correct," Mara said. "But the books created one."
The next document was a private investigator report on Nora. Pregnant. Residence. Family contacts. Employer.
One line was underlined: Subject remains unwilling to sign separation and confidentiality agreement.
The agreement was next.
Nora had agreed to leave Chicago, make no public claims against Blackwood entities, and never contact Julian through household, corporate, or family channels. In exchange, the foundation would not refer the alleged theft for prosecution.
"They threatened a pregnant woman with prison," Julian whispered.
The recorder contained one file.
Richard's voice filled the room.
NORA: I didn't take anything.
RICHARD: It does not matter what you believe happened.
NORA: Julian will believe me.
RICHARD: Julian believes evidence.
NORA: Then show him the real transfer.
RICHARD: He has already seen what he needs.
Then a scrape of a chair.
RICHARD: Sign, leave, and raise the child somewhere else.
NORA: He has a right to know.
RICHARD: My son has a right to a future not built around your accusation.
The recording ended.
Julian walked to the wall and put both hands against concrete.
His father had used Julian's trust as a weapon.
Mara handed him Nora's sealed letter.
Julian,
If Maya is with you, something has gone badly wrong. Please do not turn her into proof that you were robbed. She is a child, not restitution.
If you want to know why I left, start with the letter you supposedly sent me.
Beneath it was a copy of a letter on Julian's old stationery.
Nora,
My father showed me what you did. I will not let you use a pregnancy to force yourself into my life. Leave before I take legal action over the child.
Julian's signature was at the bottom.
He felt sick.
"I never wrote this."
Mara studied it. "Could the signature have been copied?"
"Yes. My father had stacks of signed donor stationery."
Maya watched him. "Mom kept that forever."
Julian whispered, "I'm sorry."
Maya answered with Nora's voice. "Sorry doesn't time travel."
Then the security technician approached.
"There's one more issue. The 2:13 entry wasn't Gideon Price. The badge was his. The face camera caught someone else."
He turned a tablet around.
Eleanor Blackwood stared back from the screen.
