Chapter 6 - The Motel Camera

A motel camera showed Nora alive at 4:18 that morning.

Kells pushed her toward a black SUV. Nora slammed the passenger door into his knee and ran barefoot across the parking lot.

She crossed six lanes of traffic and disappeared behind a truck stop.

The next camera showed her climbing into a delivery van.

The driver later told police he dropped her at a hospital in Bloomington because she was bleeding.

She had registered as Anna Bell.

Julian stopped outside Room 412 with Mara.

He had imagined Nora in a hundred cruel ways over the years.

Dead.

Married.

Laughing about him.

He had never imagined her forty years old, bruised, awake, and reading a paperback beneath fluorescent lights.

She looked up.

The book slipped from her hand.

"Julian."

His throat closed. "Nora."

No embrace followed.

Nora looked at Mara. "Where is Maya?"

"Safe."

Tears ran down Nora's face. "Did she make it?"

"Yes."

Julian took one step.

Nora raised a hand.

He stopped.

"She brought the photograph," he said.

"I know."

"The DNA says she is mine."

Nora looked at him. "She was always yours biologically."

The word biologically cut deeper than he expected.

"Why didn't you come to me?"

Nora laughed once, then winced from a bruised rib.

"I did."

"I never saw you."

"I know."

"I found six letters."

"I sent forty-three."

Julian went still.

Nora had sent letters to the mansion, his office, and certified mail addresses. She had left messages through corporate reception. She had once stood at the Blackwood gates with Maya feverish in the back seat.

Eleanor came out and told Nora Julian had married.

He had not.

"Why did you leave?" Julian asked.

"Because Maya had a fever, I had twenty-six dollars, and your mother told me you wanted us gone."

Julian covered his face.

Nora said, "Do not make this only about what they did."

He looked up.

"You never searched."

The sentence landed cleanly.

"I thought you betrayed me."

"So did I."

"I should have looked."

"Yes."

No forgiveness. No cruelty. Just fact.

Mara's phone rang.

Kells had been arrested.

He said Nora was taken because she possessed one document tied to an old housing program.

Nora closed her eyes.

"They found out about the deeds."

Julian frowned. "What deeds?"

Nora looked at him.

"The reason your father needed me to look like a thief in the first place."
