Chapter 16 - The Beach

They went in September.
Not on Maya's exact birthday.
Scheduling did not care about symbolism.
The beach belonged to a small hotel now.
No private Blackwood event.
No photographers.
Just cold sand, gray-blue water, and wind strong enough to ruin Nora's hair in thirty seconds.
"Perfect," she muttered.
Maya loved it.
She carried the old photograph in a plastic sleeve and matched the shoreline curve until she found the approximate spot.
"Do the pose," she ordered.
Nora stared. "No."
Julian laughed. "I agree with your mother."
"You're both boring."
A tourist eventually took a new photograph.
Not a recreation.
Maya in the middle.
Julian on one side.
Nora on the other.
No arms around each other.
No fake romance.
Wind. Laughter. Real.
Maya ran toward the water.
Julian and Nora watched.
"She looks bigger," he said.
"Treatment is working."
"I meant..."
"I know."
Julian looked at the lake. "Thank you for sending her."
Nora turned. "Do not turn that day into something beautiful."
He nodded immediately.
"You're right."
"It was terrifying."
"I know."
"But I'm glad she got there."
"Me too."
Nora was quiet for a moment.
"I hated you for years."
"Fair."
"I also defended you to Maya."
Julian looked over. "Why?"
"Because I didn't know what you knew."
"You keep saying that."
"It mattered."
Julian rubbed sand with his shoe. "I knew enough to look harder."
"Yes."
No forgiveness purchased by self-condemnation.
Then Nora said, "I don't hate you now."
His heart moved.
He did not reach for her.
"Good."
"Don't make it a proposal."
He laughed. "Wasn't planning to."
"Liar."
The possibility existed.
That was different from destiny.
They let it exist without forcing it.
Maya ran back soaked to the knees.
"Photo!"
The tourist handed over the phone.
Maya examined the image. "Better."
Nora smiled. "It is."
On the drive home, Maya slept in the back seat.
Julian said quietly, "If we ever try again, it has to be new."
Nora looked out the window. "That is a very large if."
"I know."
"And slow."
"Yes."
"And therapy."
"Already there."
"And no family office."
"Metaphorically burned."
Nora smiled. "Then maybe coffee."
Julian almost missed the exit.
Nora laughed. "Focus. Coffee is not marriage."
From the back seat Maya mumbled, half asleep, "Why are you both weird?"
For once, nobody was following them.
