Chapter 14 - The Words on the Back

Nora wrote the warning three days before Maya came to Blackwood House.

Not ten years earlier.

The photograph was old.

The message was new.

If she comes to you, protect your daughter.

Julian stared at Nora. "You knew something was coming."

"I knew Serena's investigator had found us."

"Why not call police?"

"I did. He had not threatened us yet. Being watched is frightening, but fear is not always an arrestable offense."

Nora contacted a lawyer, prepared the locker key, copied her documents, and gave Maya instructions only as a last resort.

"Why send her to me?"

"Because if I disappeared, you had resources police would take seriously."

Julian flinched.

"That's a terrible reason."

"It is also true."

Maya asked, "Did you think Julian would believe me?"

Nora looked at her daughter. "I believed the photograph would make him stop long enough to ask."

Not trust.

Procedural confidence.

Julian deserved the distinction.

For Maya's school project, they built a timeline.

Photo at the lake.

Maya's birth.

Years in Wisconsin and Illinois.

Oak Park.

Reunion.

Maya titled it: MY FAMILY TOOK THE LONG WAY.

The civil cases moved slowly.

Blackwood Development paid settlements to families harmed by the old acquisition program.

Hale entities paid separately.

Gideon lost his law license and went to prison for current obstruction and conspiracy tied to Nora's abduction.

Kells received a longer sentence for kidnapping-related conduct and assault.

Eleanor was not imprisoned for the decade-old lie.

Some people thought that was insufficient.

Nora said, "The law is not my feelings department."

Maya asked if Nora forgave Serena.

"No."

"Will you?"

"I don't know."

"Is that bad?"

"No."

Forgiveness was not a deadline.

Eleanor's relationship with Maya remained distant.

Two years later Maya chose an occasional supervised lunch.

At the first one, Eleanor brought no gift.

Good.

She said, "I am sorry I helped keep your father from you."

Maya asked, "Why did you?"

"I was afraid of losing control, reputation, and your grandfather's approval."

Maya thought. "Those are dumb."

Eleanor laughed through tears. "Yes."

Maya did not hug her.

Also good.

Julian learned not to grade repair by visible affection.

On the third anniversary of Maya's arrival, Blackwood House hosted a legal-aid fundraiser.

Maya sat on a new bench in the front hall.

Her idea.

"For people who walk too far."

Julian sat beside her.

She leaned against him without thinking.

Then she said, "Dad?"

His chest stopped.

Maya looked up. "I can call you that now, right?"

Julian's eyes filled.

"You can call me whatever feels right."

"Okay, Dad."

No ballroom gasped.

No glass broke.

No one applauded.

It was better that way.
