Chapter 9 - The Weekend Valerie Needed Him Most

Valerie remembered Savannah only because Daniel claimed he had been in Dallas.

Her mother, Helen, had suffered a stroke on a Friday afternoon.

Valerie spent forty-eight hours between the hospital and her restaurants, answering doctors with one phone and managers with another.

Daniel called twice.

Both calls lasted less than five minutes.

He said a lender conference had trapped him in Texas.

He promised to take the first flight home.

He arrived Sunday evening smelling like hotel soap and apologized for missing everything.

Valerie had cried against his chest.

Six months later, she learned he had spent that weekend in Savannah with Jenna.

The betrayal did not feel sharp.

It felt old.

Like discovering poison had been mixed into a meal already digested.

Ruth found Valerie sitting in the dark guest room with the reservation in her hand.

“Do you want me to say something hateful about him?”

Valerie almost laughed.

“Yes.”

Ruth sat beside her.

“He has terrible taste in ties.”

Valerie laughed once, then covered her face.

“I needed him.”

“I know.”

“Mom was dying.”

“I know.”

“And he was with her.”

Ruth let the silence exist.

After a while Valerie said, “I keep thinking about all the moments I defended him because I thought marriage meant loyalty.”

“Loyalty is not pretending you can’t see.”

Valerie looked at her sister.

“No.”

Ruth squeezed her hand.

“You know that now.”

The next day Priya filed for divorce and emergency financial restraints.

Daniel responded through counsel.

He requested temporary visitation with Thomas.

Valerie’s body reacted before her mind did.

“No.”

Priya nodded.

“We oppose it.”

“He hit him.”

“Yes.”

“He threatened him.”

“Yes.”

“He said he’d use him as leverage.”

“Yes.”

“Then why can he ask?”

“Because courts exist partly so even terrible people can ask.”

Valerie hated that too.

At the hearing, Daniel looked thinner.

He wore a conservative gray suit and no wedding ring.

His attorney described him as a father under extraordinary stress.

They did not deny the garage confrontation.

They reframed it.

Thomas was angry.

Daniel grabbed his shirt.

Nick misunderstood.

The audio sounded worse than the reality.

Then came the attack Valerie expected.

Nick had stolen before.

Nick had run away.

Nick had lied about his age.

Nick had “inserted himself into a private family disagreement.”

Valerie watched Nick’s shoulders shrink in the witness waiting area.

Priya leaned toward her.

“Do not react.”

Valerie wanted to stand and tell the entire courtroom about the locked refrigerator.

She stayed seated.

Then Thomas testified in chambers with a child advocate present.

Valerie was not allowed inside.

Neither was Daniel.

They waited in opposite corners of the hallway.

For forty-three minutes Valerie stared at the floor.

Daniel finally spoke.

“You’re destroying our son.”

Valerie looked at him.

He had violated no order by speaking in a courthouse under counsel’s supervision.

Still, the words felt like an old trap.

“By letting him tell the truth?”

“By making him choose sides.”

“You made him choose when you raised your hand.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“You think Nick is some saint?”

“No.”

The answer surprised him.

Valerie continued.

“He is a child who made mistakes and still protected ours.”

Daniel looked away.

“That boy is going to ruin you.”

“No.”

Valerie’s voice remained calm.

“You were counting on everyone believing that.”

The chamber door opened.

Thomas stepped out.

His face was pale.

He walked past Daniel without looking at him.

Then the judge returned to the bench.

Temporary visitation was denied.

The protection order remained.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Valerie did not feel victorious.

She felt tired.

Outside, Nick waited with an advocate.

Thomas ran toward him.

Nick smiled for the first time that day.

Then Detective Ortiz approached Valerie.

“We found the account that funded the anonymous posts about Nick.”

Valerie’s pulse quickened.

“Daniel?”

Ortiz shook her head.

“Walter Mercer.”
