Chapter 11 - Walter at the Door

Walter knew the protection order did not cover him.

That was why he came.

Ruth wanted to call the police anyway.

Valerie stopped her.

“Let him talk through the door.”

Walter looked smaller through the security camera than he did at holidays.

Without the tailored coat and family around him, he seemed like an old man who had spent too long assuming doors would open.

Valerie spoke through the intercom.

“What do you want?”

“To see my grandson.”

“No.”

“Valerie.”

“No.”

Walter closed his eyes.

“I made a mistake.”

“You hired people to smear a homeless child who protected Thomas.”

“I was trying to keep Daniel from losing everything before the facts were established.”

“The facts were on a recording.”

“Recordings can be misleading.”

Valerie almost laughed.

There it was.

The family instinct.

Preserve the name first.

Ask what happened second.

“Did you know Daniel hit Thomas?”

Walter’s face changed.

“I knew they argued.”

“That is not what I asked.”

“No.”

“Did you know Daniel planned to use Thomas as leverage?”

“No.”

“Did you know he was building a custody file against me?”

Walter looked away.

Valerie’s stomach dropped.

“You knew.”

“I knew he was documenting concerns.”

“Concerns he manufactured.”

“I didn’t know that.”

“You didn’t want to know.”

Walter’s shoulders sagged.

“I was trying to save what my sons had left.”

“You mean my building.”

Silence.

Valerie stared at the screen.

“You can leave.”

“Please let me talk to Thomas.”

“No.”

“He’s my grandson.”

“He is not a family asset.”

Walter flinched.

Valerie disconnected the intercom.

Thomas stood behind her.

She had not realized he heard everything.

“Are you mad I didn’t let him in?”

Thomas shook his head.

Then he surprised her.

“Can I write him a letter?”

Valerie’s first instinct was no.

Protect.

Block.

Control.

She stopped herself.

“What do you want to say?”

“I don’t know yet.”

“Then yes.”

Thomas wrote for almost an hour.

He did not show Valerie the letter.

He asked Priya to send it.

Valerie let him keep that privacy.

Two days later, Walter’s attorney informed prosecutors Walter would cooperate in the financial investigation.

Valerie did not know whether Thomas’s letter changed him.

She never asked.

The financial case accelerated.

Richard Mercer surrendered emails.

Jenna began negotiating her own cooperation agreement.

Daniel remained defiant.

His attorneys claimed Valerie had orchestrated the entire prosecution to gain leverage in divorce.

Then Jenna gave investigators a laptop.

On it was a folder called MERCER EXIT.

Inside were spreadsheets, draft custody filings, account maps, and a document labeled V TRANSITION.

The “V” was Valerie.

The transition plan detailed how Daniel intended to remove her from day-to-day control of the company before the money disappeared.

A section titled HEALTH EVENT STRATEGY recommended using “documented exhaustion and anxiety history” to pressure her into medical leave.

Valerie read the page and felt sick.

He had not only planned to steal her money.

He had planned to make her doubt her own mind while he did it.

Then Priya pointed to the author metadata.

The document had not been created by Daniel.

It had been created under another name.

Jenna Pierce.

Valerie stared at the screen.

“She wrote the plan.”

Priya nodded.

“Looks that way.”

“Then why is she cooperating?”

“Because people cooperate when the alternative is worse.”

Valerie looked at the file again.

At the bottom was a final note.

AFTER TRANSITION, D.M. OPTIONAL.

Valerie frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Priya’s face hardened.

“It means Jenna may have been planning to cut Daniel out too.”
