Chapter 8 - The Mercer Family Secret

Valerie put the call on speaker and motioned for Marisol to record it.
Daniel must have realized almost immediately.
His voice changed.
“Never mind.”
“No,” Valerie said. “Finish the sentence.”
He laughed softly.
“You think this is about an affair and some money.”
“Isn’t it?”
“You always did understand the dining room better than the balance sheet.”
The old insult worked differently now.
Once, it would have made Valerie defensive.
Now it simply sounded like evidence.
“Why was Thomas not supposed to hear the conversation?”
Daniel went quiet.
Then the line disconnected.
Priya Shah nearly shouted when Valerie told her about the call.
“You do not answer unknown numbers from him.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
Valerie accepted the rebuke.
Priya was right.
Curiosity was not a strategy.
Later that afternoon, Detective Ortiz arrived with financial-crimes investigator Miles Brennan.
They had subpoenaed records connected to Larkspur.
Richard Mercer was indeed involved.
But he was not the final owner.
The controlling trust belonged to Daniel and Richard’s father, Walter Mercer.
Valerie had spent fourteen years believing Walter considered her an outsider who happened to make good money.
Apparently he had considered her business an eventual family asset.
The plan began two years earlier after Walter’s construction company suffered a catastrophic lawsuit.
He needed liquidity.
Daniel proposed using Mercer Hospitality without Valerie’s knowledge.
At first, according to recovered emails, they intended to borrow against the flagship property and repay it before Valerie noticed.
Then losses grew.
Jenna entered the picture.
So did the affair.
The temporary borrowing became theft.
The backup plan became takeover.
“They were going to bankrupt me, buy Bellmere through Larkspur, and leave me with the guarantees,” Valerie said.
Brennan nodded.
“That is what the documents suggest.”
Thomas listened from the doorway.
Valerie had not realized he was there.
“Did Grandpa know Dad hit me?”
Silence filled the room.
Ortiz answered carefully.
“We don’t know.”
Thomas stared at Valerie.
“Do you?”
“No.”
“Would it matter?”
The question was too adult.
Valerie hated that Daniel had forced it into him.
“Yes,” she said. “It matters.”
Thomas’s face tightened.
“But would you still let Grandpa come to Christmas if he didn’t?”
Valerie understood what he was really asking.
Would she preserve another relationship because the ugliest part remained technically unproven?
“I don’t know yet.”
Thomas looked disappointed.
Valerie walked toward him.
“I’m not going to lie to make you feel safe for ten minutes.”
He looked up.
“I’m going to make decisions based on what we actually learn.”
“And if he knew?”
“Then he does not come near you.”
Thomas nodded.
It was not comfort.
It was something better.
A boundary with conditions rooted in truth.
That evening Nick returned to Harbor House voluntarily.
He agreed to stay if staff let him keep his backpack with him and if no one locked food away.
The center agreed.
Valerie visited with Thomas.
Nick looked embarrassed by the attention.
“I’m not a hero.”
Thomas frowned.
“You literally stepped in front of me.”
“I was mad.”
“That still counts.”
Nick looked at Valerie.
“People online say I staged it.”
“I know.”
“They found my old case file.”
“I know.”
“Somebody posted where I used to stay.”
Valerie’s stomach dropped.
“What?”
Nick showed her the screen.
An anonymous account had posted a photograph of Harbor House’s side entrance.
Under it were three words.
LIARS HIDE HERE.
Detective Ortiz was called immediately.
Within an hour, staff moved Nick to another location.
As he packed, Thomas whispered, “This is because of Dad.”
Nick zipped his backpack.
“Maybe.”
“No. It is.”
Nick looked at him.
“You can’t be sure.”
Thomas’s eyes flashed.
“My whole life people told me not to be sure about things I saw.”
Nick went quiet.
Thomas lowered his voice.
“I’m done doing that.”
Before leaving, Nick handed Valerie a folded piece of paper.
“What is this?”
“Something I copied from the blue folder.”
Valerie opened it.
A hotel reservation.
Two names.
Daniel Mercer.
Jenna Pierce.
And a date six months earlier.
The location was not Miami.
It was Savannah.
The same weekend Valerie’s mother had been hospitalized.
