Chapter 7 - The Story Jenna Tried to Sell

Jenna Pierce returned to Atlanta with two lawyers and a smile built for cameras.
She did not look like a woman caught fleeing.
She looked like someone who had prepared for the possibility.
Her attorney released a statement claiming Valerie had authorized every transfer.
Daniel, according to Jenna, had discovered accounting irregularities and confronted his wife.
Thomas had overheard part of the argument and misunderstood it.
Nick had supposedly inserted himself and recorded only the most damaging moments.
The theory was elegant.
It was also almost believable.
Valerie watched the press conference from Marisol’s office at Mercer Hospitality headquarters.
Jenna held up copies of transfer forms bearing Valerie’s real signature.
“She is using my mistakes as a script,” Valerie said.
Marisol folded her arms.
“Then we stop pretending you never made them.”
Valerie looked at her.
Marisol had dark circles beneath her eyes and three days of anger stored behind them.
“You should yell at me.”
“I’m considering it.”
“I ignored you.”
“Yes.”
“I defended him.”
“Yes.”
“I told you to stop slowing down payments.”
“Yes.”
Valerie almost smiled.
Marisol did not.
Then she placed a ledger on the desk.
“This is why I stayed.”
Inside were handwritten reconciliations Marisol kept whenever Daniel overrode her objections.
Dates.
Amounts.
Account numbers.
Notes.
One entry from eight months earlier contained a phrase Valerie had never seen.
DP REQUESTED MANUAL OVERRIDE — VP NOT PRESENT.
“DP?” Valerie asked.
“Daniel Pierce?”
Marisol shook her head.
“Daniel Mercer.”
Valerie stared.
“Why P?”
“Private.”
Marisol turned the page.
“It was a code he asked me to use for transfers tied to an acquisition project.”
“What acquisition?”
“That is the problem. There wasn’t one.”
The records showed a pattern.
Small transfers first.
Then larger ones.
Always below thresholds that triggered board review.
Money moved through consulting vendors and returned to accounts controlled by shell companies.
One shell company was registered to Jenna’s brother.
Another traced to a trust in Daniel’s mother’s name.
The third had no obvious connection.
Larkspur Management LLC.
Valerie read the name twice.
Thomas, sitting nearby with Ruth, looked up.
“Larkspur.”
Valerie turned.
“What?”
“I heard Dad say that.”
“When?”
Thomas looked uncomfortable.
“Before Christmas.”
He described waking late and hearing Daniel arguing in the study.
Daniel said, “Larkspur gets the building if Valerie defaults.”
Valerie’s skin prickled.
“What building?”
Marisol was already typing.
Mercer Hospitality owned the building housing its flagship restaurant, Bellmere.
The property had tripled in value since Valerie bought it eleven years earlier.
If the company defaulted on certain loans, the lender could force a sale.
But Larkspur was not the lender.
It was listed in an obscure side agreement as a preferred purchaser.
Valerie stared at the screen.
“Who signed this?”
Marisol zoomed in.
Valerie’s name appeared at the bottom.
Again.
A real signature on a page she did not remember reading.
Daniel had not only planned to empty the company.
He had positioned someone to buy its most valuable property after the collapse.
“Who owns Larkspur?” Valerie asked.
Marisol’s phone buzzed.
An email from outside counsel had arrived.
She opened it.
The beneficial owner was hidden behind two layers of trusts.
But one mailing address matched a luxury condo in Buckhead.
Valerie knew the address.
She had sent flowers there once.
To Daniel’s older brother, Richard.
The betrayal widened.
Not one husband.
A family plan.
Then Valerie’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
Daniel’s voice came through.
“You need to stop digging.”
Valerie went still.
“You’re violating the protection order.”
“I’m trying to save you.”
“From what?”
A pause.
Then Daniel said, “From finding out why your son was never supposed to hear that conversation.”
