Chapter 20 - The Door Thomas Controlled

Valerie did not tell Thomas about Daniel’s request that night.

She spoke first with Priya and his therapist.

Therapeutic letters were not direct contact.

They would be screened.

Thomas could refuse to read them.

He could stop at any time.

The process existed to give children control over information without forcing reconciliation.

That distinction mattered.

When Valerie finally explained it, Thomas looked suspicious.

“Do you want me to read them?”

“No.”

“You don’t?”

“I want you to choose when you understand the options.”

Thomas stared at her.

“You really don’t care?”

Valerie almost said of course I care.

Instead she answered the real question.

“I care what happens to you. I do not need you to forgive him so I can feel better about our family.”

Thomas’s face softened.

“What if I want the letters but never write back?”

“Then that is the rule.”

“What if I read one and stop?”

“Then you stop.”

“What if I wait a year?”

“Then the box waits a year.”

Thomas nodded.

“Okay.”

He chose to receive the letters.

He did not read the first one for six weeks.

When he finally did, he took it into therapy.

Valerie never asked what it said.

That restraint was one of the hardest things she had learned.

Mercer Hospitality entered a new phase too.

Valerie created an employee emergency fund named not for Nick, Thomas, or herself, but for Helen, her mother.

Helen had spent thirty years as a public-school cafeteria manager and believed food should never be used to control children.

The fund paid for emergency housing, transportation, and legal help for employees facing domestic violence or sudden displacement.

Valerie asked Harbor House to help design it.

No gala.

No giant check.

Just policy.

Marisol approved.

“Less photogenic.”

“Good.”

“More useful.”

“Exactly.”

Walter eventually accepted a plea agreement that included probation after confinement, financial penalties, and cooperation.

He sent Thomas one final letter through the approved channel.

Thomas placed it unopened in the box.

Months later he moved the box from his closet to a shelf.

Valerie noticed.

She said nothing.

Nick visited twice that summer.

The second time he brought a school report showing a B in math.

Thomas accused him of cheating.

Nick accused Thomas of being jealous.

They argued for ten minutes and then played video games.

Normal conflict.

Valerie loved it.

One evening she and Leah sat on Bellmere’s back patio after closing.

“Do you ever stop waiting for the phone call?” Leah asked.

“What phone call?”

“The one saying something went wrong.”

Valerie looked toward the restaurant windows.

Thomas and Nick were helping Marisol stack chairs.

“No.”

Leah nodded.

“Me neither.”

Valerie sipped coffee.

“But I’m trying not to confuse vigilance with love.”

Leah smiled.

“That sounds expensive.”

“Therapy is.”

They both laughed.

A year after the night in the garage, Bellmere hosted no anniversary event.

Valerie did not want to turn trauma into a holiday.

Instead, Thomas asked for spaghetti.

They sat at the same table.

Nick joined by video call from Tennessee because he had a school tournament.

Thomas held the phone beside his plate.

“You’re missing the good sauce.”

“It looks watery.”

“It’s literally the same sauce.”

“Then it was watery last year too.”

Valerie smiled.

The conversation was stupid.

Beautifully stupid.

Then Thomas looked at her.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“I read Dad’s first letter.”

Valerie kept her expression neutral.

“How do you feel?”

“I don’t know.”

“That’s allowed.”

“He said he’s sorry.”

Valerie nodded.

“Do you believe him?”

Thomas thought for a long time.

“Maybe.”

Valerie waited.

Thomas added, “But sorry doesn’t mean I’m ready.”

“No.”

“It just means he said sorry.”

Valerie smiled.

“Yes.”

Thomas returned to his spaghetti.

That was when Valerie understood healing had finally stopped looking like a reunion.

It looked like choice.
