Chapter 6 - The Child Everyone Expected to Run

Nick disappeared before sunrise.

Harbor House had placed him in a temporary bedroom after the police finished interviewing him.

At 5:40 a.m., a staff member found the window cracked open and the bed empty.

His backpack was gone.

So was the gray hoodie.

Thomas blamed himself immediately.

“I made him promise to come back.”

Valerie sat beside him in Ruth’s kitchen.

“You did not make him run.”

“He saw the news.”

That was likely true.

A television in the Harbor House common room had replayed Daniel’s attorney calling Nick troubled.

The segment included an old intake photograph from the foster system.

Someone had leaked it.

Thomas stared at the table.

“He told me adults always decide who you are before you get to explain.”

Valerie felt a sharp anger that did not know where to go.

At Daniel.

At the system.

At herself for being surprised by how quickly a bruised child could become a suspect in his own rescue.

Detective Ortiz organized a search that stayed deliberately quiet.

No press release.

No flashing patrol cars around the places unhoused kids slept.

“He won’t come toward uniforms if he thinks we’re taking him back somewhere,” she explained.

Valerie wanted to search too.

Ortiz refused at first.

Then Thomas said, “I know where he might go.”

The place was an old pedestrian bridge behind the train station.

Nick had mentioned it once while they waited for police at the restaurant.

He said trains sounded different from above.

Less like leaving.

More like choosing.

Valerie and Thomas went with Ortiz.

They found Nick sitting beneath the bridge with his backpack between his feet.

He did not look surprised.

“Your lawyer said I steal.”

Valerie stopped several feet away.

“My husband’s lawyer.”

“Same family.”

“No.”

Nick gave a bitter laugh.

“That’s what people say right before they pick the person with the house.”

Thomas took one step forward.

Nick stood.

“Don’t.”

Thomas stopped.

“You said you wouldn’t disappear.”

“I said I’d try.”

“That’s not the same.”

“No.”

Nick looked at Valerie.

“They’re going to say I lied because I took money once.”

“Did you?”

The question made Thomas gasp.

Valerie held up a hand.

Nick stared at her.

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Forty dollars.”

“Why?”

“My foster dad locked the food cabinet.”

Valerie said nothing.

Nick continued, angry now.

“I took cash from his wallet and bought sandwiches. He called the police. They wrote down stealing. Nobody wrote down that the refrigerator had a padlock.”

Detective Ortiz’s face tightened.

“Was that investigated?”

Nick shrugged.

“I ran before they finished.”

Valerie lowered herself onto the cold concrete ledge across from him.

“I need you to hear me.”

Nick looked away.

“You taking forty dollars does not make Daniel’s recording disappear.”

“It makes me a liar.”

“No.”

“It will to them.”

“Then I will tell them the whole story.”

Nick laughed without humor.

“You don’t know the whole story.”

“Then tell me.”

For nearly a minute he said nothing.

Then he admitted the foster placement had been worse than the report showed.

He had stolen food twice.

He had shoved the foster father once when the man grabbed his backpack.

He had run from three placements.

He had lied about his age to sleep in an adult overflow shelter one night.

Valerie listened.

When he finished, Nick’s eyes were wet.

“Still want me at your restaurant?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because truth is not the same thing as perfection.”

Thomas looked at his mother.

Valerie realized the sentence was for him too.

For herself.

For everyone who had spent years thinking a good family could not contain ugly facts.

Detective Ortiz’s phone rang.

She stepped away to answer.

When she returned, her face had changed.

“They found Jenna Pierce.”

Valerie stood.

“Where?”

“Miami airport.”

“Did they arrest her?”

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

Ortiz looked at Nick.

Then at Thomas.

“Because she says Daniel wasn’t the person running the money scheme.”

Valerie felt the ground shift again.

“Then who was?”

Ortiz answered.

“According to Jenna, you were.”
