Chapter 19 - The Return

Thomas hit Nick like a small linebacker.
Nick stumbled backward laughing.
“Get off me.”
“You came back.”
“I said I knew how.”
Leah wiped her eyes.
Valerie hugged her first.
Then she looked at Nick.
“May I?”
He rolled his eyes.
“You’re making it weird.”
“That is not an answer.”
Nick opened his arms.
Valerie hugged him.
Carefully.
He hugged back harder than she expected.
They ate spaghetti at the same table where the cracked phone had once sat between fear and proof.
Nick stared at his plate.
Thomas noticed.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“You’re doing the thing.”
“What thing?”
“The thing where your face says something and your mouth lies.”
Valerie almost laughed.
Nick looked embarrassed.
Then he asked, “Do I have to eat fast?”
The table went quiet.
Leah looked down.
Thomas answered before any adult could.
“No.”
Nick rubbed his thumb against the fork.
“Nobody’s going to take it?”
“No.”
“Even if I don’t finish?”
“No.”
Nick took a bite.
His eyes filled.
Valerie looked away to give him privacy.
Across the room Marisol pretended to reorganize menus.
Everyone had learned that witnessing someone’s pain did not entitle you to stare.
Later Nick told them Tennessee was “mostly acceptable.”
Leah had found a therapist he liked.
Pickles the dog slept against his door.
He was behind in math and ahead in reading.
He had joined an after-school boxing program but hated sparring.
“I just like hitting the bag.”
Thomas grinned.
“Coward.”
Nick threw a bread roll at him.
Valerie watched both boys laugh.
The sound hurt in the best possible way.
After dinner Leah asked to speak privately.
“Nick wants to come down during school breaks.”
“He is welcome.”
“I know.”
Leah hesitated.
“I need something from you.”
Valerie waited.
“Please don’t make him feel like he owes this family.”
Valerie’s chest tightened.
“I won’t.”
“He worries Thomas only likes him because of what happened.”
Valerie nodded.
“That is useful to know.”
“And he worries you helped find me because you were paying him back.”
Valerie looked toward the boys.
“I helped because he was a child who needed an adult to make calls.”
“I know.”
“Does he?”
“Not always.”
That night Valerie found Nick alone near Bellmere’s back entrance.
“You okay?”
“Yeah.”
“Leah says you’re worried we think you saved us.”
His head snapped toward her.
“She told you?”
“She asked me not to turn gratitude into a leash.”
Nick stared at the parking lot.
“That sounds like her.”
Valerie leaned against the wall.
“You did something brave.”
He looked uncomfortable.
“You also lie sometimes, steal food when you’re desperate, hate ties, and apparently insult Tennessee cereal.”
Nick looked at her.
“I don’t need you to be a hero to have a place at our table.”
His eyes filled.
“Then why do I?”
“Because Thomas loves you.”
Nick swallowed.
“And because I like you.”
“That’s it?”
“That’s usually how friendship works.”
Nick wiped his face angrily.
“You adults make everything complicated.”
Valerie smiled.
“We do.”
As they went back inside, her phone buzzed.
A message from Priya.
Daniel had filed a petition from prison.
He was requesting permission to begin sending therapeutic letters to Thomas.
Valerie stopped walking.
Nick noticed.
“What?”
She looked toward her son laughing at the table.
“The past wants a door.”
