CHAPTER 5: REVENGE IS A DISH BEST SERVED COLD

Ryan, Mark, and Daniel sat nervously inside Jake's office.

For the first time in their lives, they truly understood who Jake had become.

Ryan lowered his head.

"Jake... please help me. One phone call from you could save my companies."

Mark spoke next.

"We're sorry."

Daniel nodded.

"We made a terrible mistake."

Jake looked at them quietly.

"You mocked me."

No one answered.

"You humiliated me."

Silence.

"You watched while I was assaulted."

Still silence.

Ryan whispered,

"We were wrong."

Jake leaned back.

"When we were teenagers, you looked down on me because my grades were bad."

He paused.

"Fifteen years later, you judged me again because of my clothes."

Ryan looked ashamed.

Jake continued.

"Back then, you thought success gave you the right to humiliate others."

Ryan finally said,

"Please... give us another chance."

Jake's face remained emotionless.

"No."

Everyone froze.

"I will not interfere."

Ryan's eyes widened.

"Jake—"

"You made your choices."

Jake stood.

"The business world made theirs."

He looked at Mark and Daniel.

"The Army made its decision."

Jake walked toward the window.

"I spent my life defending this country. I won't abuse my authority to destroy you."

He turned back.

"But I also won't use it to save you."

Ryan realized everything was over.

The same man they once offered a parking job now had the power to save them.

And he chose not to.

As security escorted them out, Ryan looked back one final time.

Jake never looked at them again.

Sometimes, revenge isn't destroying someone.

May you like

Sometimes, it's simply refusing to stop them from facing the consequences of their own actions.

THE END
