Chapter 1 - The Woman Who Pushed the Stroller

For a long time, no one said a word.

Adrian Whitmore held Emma tighter against his chest. His ten-month-old daughter had stopped crying and was now staring at him with wide, confused eyes.

Vanessa took one step forward.

“Adrian, it’s not what it looks like.”

Her voice was soft.

Desperate.

Practiced.

“There must be something wrong with Olivia’s recording. Maybe the angle—”

“Stop.”

Adrian barely raised his voice.

He did not need to.

Everyone in the family room had watched the video twice.

Vanessa standing beside the landing.

Emma’s stroller angled toward the marble stairs.

Clara rushing from the hallway.

Vanessa’s hand pushing.

Not grabbing.

Not catching.

Pushing.

Then Clara throwing herself against the stroller hard enough to bruise her shoulder while Vanessa screamed that the maid had attacked the baby.

Adrian looked at the woman he had spent six months trusting inside his home.

“You pushed her.”

Vanessa flinched.

“I didn’t mean for the stroller to go that far.”

Olivia stood beside the television holding her phone.

She looked pale.

“She did it on purpose, Dad.”

Vanessa turned.

“Olivia, sweetheart—”

“Don’t call me that.”

The words came out small.

Sharp.

Adrian moved closer to his oldest daughter and put one hand on her shoulder.

“You did the right thing recording it.”

Olivia swallowed.

“I thought she was going to yell at Clara again. I didn’t think she’d touch Emma.”

Clara stood near the staircase in her gray house uniform, hands clasped so tightly her knuckles had gone white.

Vanessa looked at her.

The fear vanished from Vanessa’s face.

Something colder replaced it.

“Are you calling the police?” she asked.

Adrian stared.

“You endangered my child and tried to blame the woman who saved her. Yes.”

Vanessa straightened.

“If you call the police, you will regret it.”

“Is that a threat?”

“It’s information.”

Adrian almost laughed.

“Pack your things.”

“Adrian—”

“Now.”

Vanessa looked at Emma.

Then at Olivia.

Finally Clara.

“This isn’t over.”

She walked upstairs.

Ten minutes later, she left with one suitcase and no apology.

The front door closed.

The house went silent.

Adrian looked at Clara.

“I’m sorry.”

She shook her head.

“You were confused.”

“I believed her.”

“She is good at lying.”

Clara’s gaze moved toward the driveway.

“Almost as good as the people who came before her.”

A cold line moved through Adrian’s spine.

“What does that mean?”

Clara did not answer immediately.

Then she said, “Vanessa did not come into this house by accident.”

Adrian’s phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

One text.

ASK CLARA WHAT GRACE FOUND AFTER THE HARBOR HOUSE FIRE.

Adrian stared at the screen.

Grace.

His wife.

Olivia and Emma’s mother.

Dead eleven months.

Clara saw the message.

Her face changed.

Adrian looked up.

“What did Grace find?”

Clara whispered, “The reason she was afraid before she died.”

Adrian’s grip tightened around the phone.

“Afraid of who?”

Clara looked toward the black windows.

“Someone you still call family.”
