CHAPTER 3: THE TRUTH NO ONE BELIEVED

Ryan crossed his arms.
"So this is your plan? Hire someone to pretend?"
Samuel's expression darkened.
"I don't pretend."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Sir, with all respect, you were suspended last month."
Samuel nodded.
"Temporarily. The investigation cleared me yesterday."
Ryan laughed.
"Convenient timing."
Jake remained silent.
He had spent years commanding troops.
He had no interest in proving himself to people who had already decided who he was.
Ryan smirked.
"If you're really a General, prove it."
Jake calmly answered,
"I don't owe you proof."
Just then, the ballroom doors opened.
The host, Victor Hayes, entered.
One of the country's most influential defense contractors.
Everyone rushed to greet him.
Then Victor saw Jake.
Immediately, he walked across the room.
"Sir! I was beginning to think you wouldn't come."
To everyone's shock, Victor shook Jake's hand respectfully.
Ryan stared.
"You know him?"
Victor looked confused.
"Know him? General Carter saved my life overseas."
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Victor continued.
"He is the youngest four-star General in modern military history."
Nobody laughed anymore.
Ryan turned pale.
Mark and Daniel looked horrified.
Victor then noticed the tension.
"What happened here?"
Several guests quietly pointed toward Ryan.
Victor's expression hardened.
He ordered security to preserve all surveillance footage.
Ryan suddenly felt uneasy.
Jake looked at him one last time.
"You should start worrying."
May you like
Then Jake walked away.
