Chapter 9 - THE RED ROOM

Margaret told me she had spent decades believing my father caused Jamie’s crash.

Dr. Bell had told her he ran a red light.

My father had never been charged.

The truth had been buried around the same time as my surgery.

Then Brooke found a note from Bell.

IF PETER EVER COMES LOOKING, TELL HIM THE TRUTH BEFORE HE FINDS THE RED ROOM.

Nobody knew what the red room was.

Then Emma pointed upstairs.

“Red door.”

The locked east wing contained a child’s bedroom painted dark red.

Dinosaurs covered the shelves.

Jamie had stayed there.

Under a loose floorboard, Ryan found a metal tin.

Inside was Jamie’s original letter.

Jamie wrote that his father had been arguing, driving fast, and entered the intersection after the light changed.

My father had not caused the crash.

Peter had.

Then we heard the front door slam.

Every hidden medical file had vanished.

On the steps sat a red toy dinosaur.

Under it:

STOP DIGGING INTO BELL’S CHILDREN.
