Chapter 5 - The Unseen Puppeteer

When Nathaniel returned to the foyer, state police cars were pulling up the circular driveway, their red and blue lights flashing through the rain.

Vanessa was cuffed near the front door, her midnight-blue dress ruined, her hair disheveled.

"You think you’ve won, Nathaniel?!" Vanessa sneered, her face twisted with bitter, unhinged laughter.

"You think I did this all by myself?!"

Nathaniel stopped in front of her, holding the leather diary in his hand.

"Who helped you, Vanessa?" Nathaniel asked, his voice dripping with venom.

"Who signed the fake medical confinement papers that kept the local authorities away?"

Vanessa smirked, wiping blood from her lip where she had bitten her tongue during the struggle.

"Check your family trust's medical board, darling," Vanessa whispered maliciously.

"Check who authorized your wife's 'accidental disappearance' three years ago."

Nathaniel’s blood turned to liquid ice.
