Chapter 12 - THE STAFF SETTLEMENT

Employment counsel calculated unpaid wages, overtime, interest, and penalties.
The estate settled valid claims.
Total:
$318,000.
Plus attorney fees and administrative costs.
Not hush money.
Workers could speak.
The trust also created an independent complaint process outside family management.
Then the harder part.
Several employees refused settlement initially because they feared taking money meant leaving.
It did not.
Some stayed.
Some left.
One housekeeper who had worked for us nineteen years said:
“I don’t want Mrs. Helena destroyed.”
Neither did I.
Accountability is not annihilation.

She wanted her Sundays paid.
We paid them.
