Chapter 7 - THE FIRST THEFT
Dad sat down.
Mom did not.
Maybe she already knew.
I noticed.
That hurt.
Dad said.
“Your grandmother hated Julian.”
I laughed.
“Excellent start.”
“She didn’t trust him.”
“She was right.”
Dad winced.
“She planned to lock your trust until forty.”
“What?”
“You would have had no control.”
“That was her choice.”
“I thought it was unfair.”
“So you stole?”
“No.”
His voice broke.
“I redirected.”
I stared.
“Dad.”
He rubbed his face.
“I created the account.”
“In my name.”
“Yes.”
“Julian witnessed it.”
“Yes.”
Mom whispered.
“Claire—”
I turned on her.
“You knew?”
She sat down.
“Yes.”
The room became very quiet.
They had used Grandma’s reserve to help Julian’s first business.
To buy our first house.
To pay Dad’s legal fees after a malpractice settlement.
All framed as family support.
All hidden from me.
I felt stupid.
Not because I should have known.
Because everyone around me had known something.
The quiet wife.
The dependable daughter.
The sister who handled problems.
Apparently, I was also the easiest person to steal from politely.
I asked.
“How much is left?”
Dad looked away.
“None.”
The $5.8 million was gone.
Julian had known I was vulnerable to a trust scandal.
He and Chloe used the old theft to build cover for the new one.
My father whispered.
“I’m sorry.”
I laughed.
“You’re sorry now because it’s useful.”
“That’s not fair.”
“No?”
I stood.
“Grandma left that money to me.”
“You decided I didn’t deserve the terms.”
“You forged my account.”
“You let Julian witness it.”
“You lied for eleven years.”
Dad cried.
I did not.
Not yet.
Then Anna entered.
She had traced North Harbor.
Owner.
A holding company in Delaware.
Beneficial owner.
Chloe Morgan.
Chloe stopped breathing.
The room turned toward her.
She whispered.
“No.”
Anna continued.
“Bellmere is owned by Julian.”
Julian stood.
“That’s false.”
Anna put the filings on the table.
Four-point-seven million had not gone to strangers.
It had gone to my husband and my sister.
Then Mark looked at the old trust records.
His expression changed.
“Wait.”
“What?”
“The same accountant prepared both the 2013 trust transfer and the North Harbor entities.”
