Chapter 6 - GRANDMA’S ACCOUNT

My grandmother, Ruth Morgan, built Morgan Events from a catering company in a church basement.
She died twelve years ago.
She left me control.
Chloe received cash.
My mother received real estate.
Dad received nothing directly.
That had always bothered him more than he admitted.
Grandma also maintained a reserve trust.
$6 million.
Supposedly distributed before her death.
Chloe claimed it wasn’t.
She produced bank records.
A transfer.
$5.8 million.
Destination.
An account tied to me.
The board turned.
I stared at the page.
“That’s not mine.”
Julian smiled.
“Convenient.”
Anna took the document.
Her face changed.
“This account existed.”
I looked at her.
“What?”
“It was opened under your Social Security number.”
The room tilted.
Dad stood.
“Claire.”
“I didn’t open it.”
Chloe laughed softly.
“Of course.”
I wanted to throw the chair.
Instead.
“Get the original bank records.”
Julian objected.
I ignored him.
The board recessed.
Outside, Dad followed me.
“You need to tell me the truth.”
I turned.
“That’s rich.”
He flinched.
Good.
“I didn’t open that account.”
“Then who did?”
“I don’t know.”
Mom came out.
“Claire, please.”
I stepped back.
“No.”
She stopped.
“Not one more please.”
Mom cried harder.
I hated that it still worked on me.
Then Anna called.
The account had been closed eleven years earlier.
Signature card available.
We obtained it by afternoon.
Applicant.
Claire Morgan.
Signature.
Looked like mine.
Witness.
Julian Vance.
My husband.
Except eleven years ago, Julian and I had been married only six months.
And he had never told me about it.
The account received Grandma’s reserve.
Then transferred money to three places.
One was our first house.
One was Julian’s startup investment.
One was my father’s law firm.
I stared at Dad.
His face went white.

“What did you do?”
