Chapter 16 - CHLOE’S DEAL

Chloe pleaded guilty to conspiracy and agreed to restitution.

She avoided prison because of cooperation, pregnancy, and limited direct control over the larger scheme.

People were furious.

So was I.

Then I read the evidence.

Julian had designed most of it.

Mark engineered the legal traps.

Chloe approved vendors and took money.

Guilty.

But not equally guilty.

Accuracy matters even when anger hates it.

She received home confinement after the baby was born.

Probation.

Financial penalties.

No corporate role.

At sentencing, she asked to speak.

I almost left.

Stayed.

She looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

I waited.

“For Julian.”

“For the money.”

“For Mom.”

Interesting order.

Then.

“For saying you would ruin your birthday.”

My throat tightened.

She cried.

“I knew you wouldn’t make a scene.”

There it was.

She had counted on my composure.

Everyone had.

“I knew you’d protect everyone.”

She looked down.

“I used that.”

That was the first apology I believed.

Not enough.

Real.

After court, Mom asked.

“Can we ever have family dinner again?”

I almost laughed.

“Why would we?”

She cried.

Then I softened.

Not because she deserved it.

Because I was tired.

“Maybe someday.”

She nodded.

“Not Sunday.”

“No.”

“Not holidays.”

“Mom.”

“Okay.”

Julian refused a plea.

He wanted trial.

Of course.

He blamed Chloe.

Mark.

Dad.

Me.

Everyone.

His defense theory.

He was a hardworking husband trapped inside a rich family’s dysfunction.

Almost funny.

Then his attorney subpoenaed our marriage therapist.

We had gone twice.

Six years earlier.

Private records.

He planned to use them to show I was controlling.

I stared at the subpoena.

Then smiled.

Mark asked.

“Why are you smiling?”

Because Julian had forgotten something.

The therapist had documented why we came.

Julian admitted using my credit card without permission.

Years before the vendor fraud.

A pattern.

May you like

His own defense had just opened an old door.
