Chapter 4 - THE FAMILY ARCHIVE

My father’s law firm had represented Morgan Events for twenty-three years.

Every trust amendment.

Every shareholder agreement.

Every acquisition.

Every boring stack of paper nobody reads twice.

Someone had inserted the fake agreement into our archive.

Metadata showed it had been scanned four months earlier.

User account.

Melissa Grant.

Senior paralegal.

She worked for Dad.

He looked sick when he saw the name.

“Melissa wouldn’t.”

Everyone says that before evidence.

We interviewed her.

She cried before we asked the second question.

Julian paid her.

Not cash.

Tuition for her son.

Forty-two thousand dollars.

She said Julian told her the document corrected an old filing error.

He told her Dad knew.

She believed him.

Or wanted to.

Then Chloe called me.

“Can we talk?”

“No.”

“Claire.”

“No.”

“I’m pregnant.”

Silence.

My hand went cold.

I sat down.

“What?”

She started crying.

“I’m pregnant.”

I looked at the wall.

My first thought was cruel.

His?

I did not say it.

She heard it anyway.

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes.

“How far?”

“Ten weeks.”

The affair had been going on longer than the garage footage.

Of course.

Chloe whispered.

“Mom knows.”

That hurt more than I expected.

“How long?”

“Two weeks.”

Two weeks.

My mother knew before my birthday.

She let me cut cake under gold balloons while my sister carried my husband’s child.

I hung up.

Then called Mom.

She answered crying.

“Claire.”

“You knew.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“No.”

“Please.”

“You were protecting Chloe.”

“She was terrified.”

“I was married.”

“I know.”

“You knew I was walking into that dinner.”

Mom sobbed.

“I thought they would tell you after.”

“After cake?”

No answer.

I laughed.

Then cried.

Both.

My office door opened.

Anna stepped in, saw my face, and stopped.

I held up one finger.

She waited.

Mom whispered.

“Don’t punish the baby.”

I closed my eyes.

“I’m not.”

Then I said the thing she did not want to hear.

May you like

“But I am done protecting the adults.”
