Chapter 15 - MY FATHER IN HANDCUFFS

Dad did not run.

He waited in his office.

When agents arrived, he handed over his phone.

Laptop.

Files.

Then held out his hands.

They did not cuff him.

Not then.

Mom cried in the hallway.

Chloe arrived screaming.

“You did this!”

At me.

Of course.

“You got Dad arrested!”

“He isn’t arrested.”

“He’s being investigated because of you!”

Dad turned.

“Chloe.”

She stopped.

His voice was tired.

“This is because of me.”

She stared.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Dad—”

“I forged Claire’s account.”

Silence.

“I moved Ruth’s money.”

“I lied.”

Chloe started crying.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“And I taught you that someone would always fix the floor after you broke the glass.”

That landed.

Mom covered her mouth.

Mark was arrested that afternoon.

He had fabricated corporate records.

Obstructed the audit.

Conspired with Julian.

He also finally admitted paternity.

Chloe refused to speak to him.

For two hours.

Then visited his attorney.

Family is weird.

Julian was charged with wire fraud, identity theft, conspiracy, and theft from the company.

Chloe faced conspiracy and fraud charges.

Her attorney negotiated.

She cooperated.

Immediately.

Julian learned from television.

That relationship lasted exactly as long as prison risk.

Rachel cooperated too.

Melissa did.

Leo became a protected whistleblower under company policy.

Dad accepted a plea on old financial misconduct.

No prison.

Restitution.

Professional discipline.

He surrendered his law license.

That broke him more than court.

I visited him at home.

He sat in his study with boxes.

“No clients.”

“No phone.”

He looked small.

I hated seeing him small.

Then hated myself for caring.

He said.

“I’m sorry.”

I sat.

“I know.”

“That’s not forgiveness.”

“No.”

He nodded.

Fair.

Then he handed me one final document.

Grandma’s original trust letter.

Not legal.

Personal.

Claire,

Your weakness will be believing that because you can carry everyone, you should.

I read it twice.

Then cried.

Dad looked away.

May you like

Maybe the first decent thing he had done without being asked.
