Chapter 11 - THE PUBLIC LIE

Headlines spread.
HEIRESS HID MILLIONS IN SECRET ACCOUNT.
FAMILY COMPANY WAR TURNS UGLY.
SISTER CLAIMS ABUSE OF POWER.
Chloe went on camera.
Pregnant.
Soft sweater.
No makeup.
She cried.
“I made a terrible personal mistake.”
Then she looked into the lens.
“But Claire is using corporate power to destroy everyone who disagrees with her.”
I watched from my office.
Anna sat beside me.
“Turn it off.”
“No.”
Chloe continued.
“She has always controlled the family.”
“She controls our parents financially.”
False.
“She used Grandma’s hidden trust money.”
False.
“She threatened to take my baby’s future.”
I paused the video.
“I never said that.”
Anna nodded.
“I know.”
“But people don’t.”
That was the problem.
Then Chloe did something smarter.
She admitted the affair.
Fully.
People love confession.
It made the rest sound honest.
“Yes, I fell in love with Julian.”
Fell.
Like stairs.
“He was unhappy for years.”
Julian appeared in a separate interview.
He said our marriage had been “emotionally dead.”
He claimed I cared more about ownership than people.
Then he cried.
Badly.
Still effective.
Clients called.
Two paused contracts.
One canceled.
Payroll was safe for six weeks.
After that?
Not guaranteed.
The board panicked.
An independent director suggested settlement.
Reinstate Julian temporarily.
Place Chloe on leave.
Stop forensic review until after divorce mediation.
I stared.
“You want to pause a theft investigation to improve optics?”
“We want to preserve the company.”
“Same sentence everyone uses before burying evidence.”
The director stiffened.
Then Anna’s phone rang.
She listened.
Her face drained.
“What?”
“The forensic server.”
“What?”
“Someone wiped it.”
My body went cold.
All working copies of the vendor audit.
Deleted.
Backups?
Compromised.
Who had access?
Anna.
Mark.
IT director Leo Harris.
And me.
Security logs showed my credentials.
Again.
Someone was trying to make me the person destroying evidence.
May you like
Then Leo disappeared.
