Chapter 9 - The Sister's Share

Penelope didn't have her umbrella anymore. Her wet blonde hair hung in stringy clumps over the collar of her cashmere coat, and her mascara was smeared across her cheekbones in dark, jagged tracks.
The barrel of the pistol didn't waver.
"You always were the smart one, Toby," Penelope whispered, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. "Sitting in that chair with your sketchbooks and your historical maps. You knew where the 1941 flood bypass was the whole time."
Tobias stepped half an inch to the left, putting his body between the gun and me.
"Put the gun down, Penelope," Tobias said calmly. "The Coast Guard is already sweeping the channel. You shoot a nine-millimeter in an enclosed concrete bunker, the pressure wave will blow your eardrums out."
"I don't care," she said, her voice rising into that shrill, unstable register I had heard a hundred times during board meetings. "You think I wanted to sleep with Garrett? You think I wanted to spend three years watching him kiss Rosalind on the cheek every morning while I waited in a rented townhouse in Towson?"
"Penelope," I said, stepping out from behind Tobias’s shoulder.
She looked at me. For a second, a flicker of genuine, childhood familiarity passed through her eyes—the girl who used to borrow my hair ribbons before the high school regattas.
"You were our sister," I said, the words catching on the bile in my throat. "Mom raised you in our house."
"Your mother treated me like a charity case!" Penelope spat, her finger tightening on the trigger. "A stray dog her sister left behind! She gave you the family trust, she gave Toby the stock options, and she gave me an allowance managed by your father's accounting firm! Every time I wanted to buy a car, I had to submit three written estimates to a fiduciary!"
"Because Arthur Vance was laundering money through your trust fund when you were sixteen!" Tobias shouted.
Penelope blinked, her hand jerking slightly. "What?"
"Arthur didn't give you that townhouse in Towson out of love, Penelope," Tobias said, taking a slow, calculated step forward. "He put your name on the shell corporation that owns the illegal waste-dumping barges in the bay. If the EPA files federal charges on Monday, Garrett walks away clean with the shipyard, and you take the fall for twenty years of environmental felonies."
