Chapter 11 - The Edge of the Intake

The shotgun flew from Garrett’s grip, bouncing off the steel grating before tumbling forty feet down into the churning black water of the flooded drydock.

Garrett slammed his elbow backward into Tobias’s ribs, catching him in the old surgical scar tissue with a sickening, wet crunch.

Tobias let out a ragged gasp, his grip faltering for half a second.

Garrett spun around, pulling a six-inch rigging knife from his boot sheath. The steel blade caught the red emergency light with a dull, bloody gleam.

"You should have stayed in the chair, Toby," Garrett hissed, slashing the blade horizontally across Tobias’s chest. The knife sliced clean through the heavy fleece, leaving a thin line of red across his collarbone. "I spent five years pushing your worthless ass up the ramp to the board meetings. I earned this shipyard."

I didn't think. I didn't hesitate.

I scooped up the heavy steel pipe wrench lying near the drainage valve with both hands, stepped forward, and swung it with every ounce of strength left in my shaking shoulders.

The heavy cast-iron head struck Garrett’s right knee with a loud, hollow crack.

Garrett let out a high, strangulated shriek, his leg buckling beneath him as he collapsed against the rusted railing. The knife slipped from his fingers, clattering through the metal grating into the dark.

He looked up at me, clutching his shattered kneecap, his face twisted into an expression of raw, unadulterated disbelief.

"Rosalind..." he breathed, his voice cracking into that old, sweet cadence that had fooled me for three years. "Rosalind, baby... listen to me. Arthur forced me into this. He threatened to cut me out of the estate... he told me if I didn't secure the drydock—"

I raised the heavy iron wrench again, holding it two inches from the bridge of his nose.

"Don't call me baby, Garrett," I whispered, my voice steady as stone. "You make me sick."

Behind us, the heavy metal door to the street-level access shaft burst open under the beam of four high-powered searchlights.
