Chapter 5 - The Sub-Basement Grate

Tobias didn't reach for a weapon. He pulled a keycard wrapped in aluminum foil from his pocket and pointed toward the rusted storm drain below the crane tracks.
"The foundation vaults run forty feet below the waterline," he whispered. "The original blueprints from 1941 have a flood bypass that connects Berth 12 directly to the municipal stormwater system."
We dropped through the iron grate into the pitch-black crawlspace. The smell of stagnant seawater and sulfur was suffocating.
I crawled on my hands and knees behind Tobias, my palms scraping against broken concrete and discarded copper wire. Every breath burned in my lungs, the lingering chemical aftertaste of Garrett’s nightly "sleep remedy" making my vision double at the edges.
"Tobias," I gasped, stopping on the wet concrete. "My hands... they're going numb."
Tobias stopped immediately, turned around, and pulled a small penlight from his collar. He flicked the beam onto my fingers.
My nail beds were a dull, purplish gray.
"Arsenic trioxide combined with copper sulfate," Tobias muttered through his teeth. "The withdrawal hits the peripheral nerves forty-eight hours after the last dose, but the acute shock from the river accelerated the liver clearance."
He reached into his pocket, pulled out a blister pack of two large white tablets, and shoved them into my hand.
"Activated charcoal and penicillamine chelator," he said. "Chew them. Don't swallow them whole."
The pills tasted like crushed chalk and battery acid. I chewed, gagging on the dry powder until I could swallow with a mouthful of rainwater dripping from the ceiling.
"Why Berth 12?" I asked, wiping black soot from my lips. "Why does Garrett need to blow up an eighty-year-old drydock?"
Tobias looked at me in the narrow beam of the penlight, his eyes dark and hollow.
"Because our parents didn't die in a car accident on the Jones Falls Expressway, Rosalind," Tobias said. "Their car was pushed into the water right here. And their real bodies are still sealed inside the concrete footer of Pillar 4."
