Chapter 13 - Green Mount at Sunrise

By 6:30 AM, the storm had cleared out over the Chesapeake, leaving behind a sharp, cold winter sky the color of polished steel.

The wrought-iron gates of Green Mount Cemetery were open.

Two hearse vans from the state medical examiner’s office sat idling on the paved path near the Montgomery family plot.

Tobias and I stood side by side near the twin granite headstones that had stood empty for fifteen years. Tobias was wearing a dark wool overcoat over his bandaged chest, his hands resting lightly on the silver handle of an old wooden cane—not for paralysis, but for the cracked rib healing beneath his shirt.

I held a small bouquet of white winter hydrangeas in my bare hands. The air was twenty-five degrees, freezing the moisture on my eyelashes, but for the first time in three years, the tremor in my fingers was completely gone.

"The toxicology report came back from Hopkins," I said quietly, looking down at the freshly turned earth where the real remains of our parents were finally being laid to rest. "The chelation worked. The liver damage is reversible."

Tobias looked out over the cemetery hill toward the distant cranes of the Baltimore harbor.

"What are you going to do with the drydock?" he asked.

"Rebuild Berth 12," I said without hesitation. "Cancel every third-party contract with Vance Logistics. And hire three hundred union shipbuilders to finish the deep-water dredging by August."

Tobias smiled—a small, tired, but genuine expression that took fifteen years of shadows off his face.

"Dad would have liked that," he said.

"Dad would have told us we took too long," I replied.
