Chapter 19 - THE LAST KEY

One year after the night in the rain, the board gathered at Aurelia Grand again.

This time at eight in the morning.

Civilized.

We had recovered most diverted funds.

Sold two weak properties.

Kept fifteen.

Raised staff wages at the lowest-paid resorts.

Reduced executive bonuses.

That caused more outrage in the boardroom than the fraud.

Predictable.

Dad retired as trust chair.

He nominated me.

I declined.

Everyone stared.

“Why?” Adrian’s replacement asked.

“Because being born near the keys doesn’t make me the best person to hold them.”

We appointed an independent chair.

I kept a board seat.

And my design studio.

That was enough.

After the meeting, Dad and I walked through the lobby.

He stopped where Julian had ordered me removed.

“I wanted to come get you that night.”

“I know.”

“You told me not to.”

“I needed to walk out myself.”

He nodded.

Then smiled.

“You also made me wait six minutes before calling lawyers.”

“I was wet.”

He laughed.

Outside, rain began again.

Light this time.

I stood beneath the awning.

No fear.

No humiliation.

Just weather.

Mateo approached with an envelope.

Inside was the last physical master key Julian had possessed.

Recovered from a safe-deposit box.

I turned it over in my hand.

Heavy brass.

Old-fashioned.

Engraved with one word.

OWNER.

I laughed.

“He really had this made?”

Mateo nodded.

“Apparently.”

I handed it to Dad.

“Frame it.”

“Why?”

May you like

“Because sometimes arrogance deserves a souvenir.”
