Chapter 14 - THE NIGHT THE STAFF CHOSE SIDES

I did not answer Julian that morning.
Not yet.
Because the staff were gathering downstairs.
Rumors had spread.
Some thought the resorts were closing.
Some thought I was selling everything.
Some believed Julian would return by lunch.
I walked into the employee ballroom.
No cameras.
No reporters.
Just people.
Housekeepers.
Cooks.
Engineers.
Concierges.
Managers.
The same employees who had lowered their eyes when security removed me.
One guard stood in the back.
He looked ashamed.
I recognized him.
He had held the door while I stepped into the rain.
After the meeting, he approached.
“Mrs. Vale, I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“I should have refused.”
“You were following a lawful executive order as you understood it.”
His eyes filled.
“Still.”
I nodded.
“Still.”
That was enough.
I announced payroll was secure.
No mass layoffs.
No retaliation.
No loyalty tests.
Then an older housekeeper raised her hand.
“Are you taking over?”
I paused.
“Temporarily.”
She frowned.
“Good.”
People laughed.
The tension broke.
Then the CFO pulled me aside.
She had found another account.
Zurich.
$62 million.
Money transferred from resort development budgets over five years.
Authorized by Julian.
Co-authorized by someone with Laurent family credentials.
Not Adrian.
May you like
The credential belonged to my father.
