Chapter 11 - The Shattered Mirror

An hour later, the private wing of the Whitmore Pediatric Clinic was dead silent.

Nora sat on the edge of the plush hospital bed, holding Lucy’s small, bandaged hand.

The pediatric surgeon had treated the cut inside Lucy’s mouth, cleaned the wound, and preserved the tooth for potential reimplantation. Lucy was finally asleep, resting under the gentle influence of pain medication, her breathing slow and steady.

Nora stroked her daughter’s soft curls, tears finally spilling freely down her cheeks.

The shock had worn off, leaving behind a deep, aching exhaustion.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

Charles stepped into the room, holding two paper cups of warm tea.

He set them on the bedside table and pulled up a chair beside his daughter.

For a long time, neither of them spoke.

"I’m sorry, Dad," Nora whispered, her voice cracking. "I should have listened to you six years ago."

Charles looked at his daughter, his eyes softening completely.

"You wanted to believe in him, Nora," Charles said gently, taking her trembling hand. "That isn't a flaw. That’s who you are. You see the good in people, even when they don't deserve it."

Nora wiped her cheeks with her sleeve. "I made excuses for him every single day. When he stayed out late, when he ignored Lucy's birthdays, when he made me feel like I was taking up space in my own home... I thought if I worked harder, if I was quieter, he would love us."

Charles squeezed her hand tightly.

"A real man doesn't need you to be quieter, Nora. And he certainly doesn't protect another woman while his child bleeds on the floor."

Nora looked at her daughter’s quiet face.

"It’s over," Nora said, her voice regaining a firm, unyielding strength. "I'm filing for divorce tomorrow. I want him completely out of our lives."

"It's already being handled," Charles promised softly.
