CHAPTER 9: THE LETTER FROM PRISON

A year after my wedding, I received a letter from Daniel.
He was in prison.
He had been convicted of assault and battery.
He wrote to me, apologizing for everything.
Sarah,
I'm sorry for what I did to you. I was angry. I was broken. I took it out on you, and you didn't deserve it.
I know I can't undo what I did. I know I can't take back the pain I caused you. But I wanted you to know that I'm trying to be better.
I'm in therapy. I'm facing what I did. I'm learning to be a better person.
I don't expect you to forgive me. I don't expect you to believe me. But I wanted you to know that I'm sorry.
Take care of yourself.
Daniel
I read the letter three times.
Then I put it in a drawer and closed it.
I didn't write back.
Because there was nothing left to say.
May you like
I had moved on.
And Daniel was no longer part of my story.
