CHAPTER 4: THE SURPRISE

Daniel came home from work that evening to find the kitchen table empty.
My ring was gone.
The hospital report was gone.
And in its place was a single envelope.
He opened it and found the divorce papers.
I watched him from across the street, sitting in my car, waiting to see his reaction.
He turned pale. Then red. Then he started screaming.
I could see him through the window, throwing things, smashing furniture, calling my name like a curse.
He grabbed his phone and started calling me.
I let it go to voicemail.
Then I started recording.
By the time he realized I wasn't coming back, he had left eleven voicemails. Every single one of them was a threat.
I saved them all.
Evidence.
The next morning, I filed for a protective order.
The judge granted it within hours.
Daniel was served with papers that afternoon.
He was not allowed to come within five hundred feet of me.
He was not allowed to contact me.
He was not allowed to threaten me.
And if he broke the order, he would go to jail.
Daniel couldn't believe it.
He called his lawyer. He called his mother. He called everyone he knew.
May you like
And everyone told him the same thing.
He had made a terrible mistake.
