CHAPTER 5: THE BATTLE

The divorce was brutal.
Daniel fought every step of the way. He accused me of being unstable. He accused me of fabricating the injuries. He accused me of trying to steal his money.
None of it worked.
Because I had evidence.
I had photographs of my burns. I had the hospital report. I had voicemails of him threatening me. I had bank statements showing how he had drained our accounts to support his sister's spending.
And I had my attorney.
Rebecca was relentless. She cross-examined Daniel, Megan, and everyone else who tried to defend them.
"Mr. Whitmore, is it true that you threw a mug of hot coffee at your wife?"
"That was an accident."
"An accident? You threw it because she refused to give your sister access to her bank account."
"I was frustrated."
"You were abusive."
"I was not abusive."
"Then why did the hospital report state that your wife had second-degree burns consistent with domestic violence?"
Daniel didn't have an answer.
Because he knew he was guilty.
And so did everyone else in the courtroom.
In the end, the judge awarded me full custody of our assets.
I got the house. I got the savings. I got the investments.
Daniel got nothing but a criminal record.

Megan was charged with fraud.
And I walked out of the courtroom a free woman.
