Chapter 8 - The Receipt in Madison's Wallet

By two in the morning, The Imperial Room was nearly empty.

The chandeliers had been dimmed.

Broken glass was gone.

The brown stain remained on the carpet near table twelve.

I sat at the bar in Gabriel’s shirt.

Madison had found it in the emergency bag he kept in the Bentley.

It hung almost to my knees.

Gabriel sat beside me with his tie loosened.

For once, Chicago’s most feared man looked tired.

I stared at my wedding ring.

“You knew something was wrong before you came in.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

He looked toward Madison.

She was across the room giving another statement.

“She called my private number.”

I frowned.

“I never gave her your number.”

“No.”

Madison overheard and turned.

“You gave it to me.”

I stared at her.

She approached slowly.

“Six months ago. When my ex kept waiting outside after closing.”

Memory returned.

A rainy night.

Madison crying in the employee locker room.

Me writing a number on the back of a receipt.

I had told her it belonged to someone who could arrange a safe ride if she ever felt trapped.

I had never told her whose number it was.

“You kept that?”

She nodded.

“In my wallet.”

Her mouth trembled.

“You told me something that night.”

“What?”

“That cruel people survive by convincing everyone else that making trouble is worse than what they’re doing.”

I looked down.

I barely remembered saying it.

Madison did.

“When Preston poured the Coke, everyone froze,” she whispered. “Including me.”

She wiped at one eye.

“Then I remembered what you said.”

Gabriel looked at me.

And suddenly the black Bentley arriving outside did not feel like the moment a powerful man came to save his wife.

It felt like something else.

A kindness I had forgotten had found its way back to me.

I reached for Madison.

She fell into my arms.

For several seconds neither of us spoke.

The black Bentley had brought Gabriel to the restaurant. A forgotten kindness had brought Madison to the phone. That difference would matter more than any headline.
