Chapter 22 - To Anna

Near closing time, I carried one final Coca-Cola to table eleven.

Gabriel looked suspicious.

"Why?"

"Tradition."

"We have been open three months."

"Very old tradition."

He laughed.

I sat opposite him.

We lifted our glasses.

The ice clicked softly.

Once, that sound would have taken me back to humiliation.

Now it sounded like something ending and something beginning.

I looked through the window at the rain washing the city streets clean.

Then I looked around the room we had reclaimed.

For years I thought strength meant never needing anyone to walk through the door for me.

I had been wrong.

Strength was knowing I could stand alone.

Love was knowing I did not always have to.

And dignity had never belonged to Gabriel Kane, Preston Hale, expensive restaurants, powerful families, or men who could make phone calls and change lives.

It had been mine even when Coca-Cola was dripping from my hair.

It had been mine when everyone looked away.

It had been mine before the Bentley stopped outside.

Before Gabriel crossed the marble floor.

Before anyone discovered whose wife I was.

I reached across the table.

Gabriel took my hand.

The chandeliers dimmed one by one above us.

In my office upstairs, framed beside Luis's letter, was the old receipt on which I had written Gabriel's private number for Madison.

She had returned it the week we reopened.

On the back, beneath my handwriting, she had added four words.

You came for me first.

Those words had taken me months to understand.

Gabriel had walked through the doors for his wife.

But he was not the reason I survived Preston Hale.

Madison had spoken because I once spoke for her.

Luis had reminded me of my worth because he had watched me treat the kitchen staff like human beings when wealthy guests treated them like furniture.

Marcus had testified because I had covered his shifts when his daughter was sick.

Even the violinist had handed investigators a recording from his phone because I had once brought him dinner after learning musicians were not allowed employee meals.

The people Preston never noticed had been watching all along.

Power had entered The Imperial Room in a black Bentley.

Courage had already been there.

It had been carrying plates.

Washing dishes.

Playing violin.

Checking reservations.

Waiting tables.

Gabriel squeezed my hand.

"What are you thinking?"

I smiled.

"That you made a very dramatic entrance."

"I was restrained."

"You arrived with security in the rain wearing a charcoal coat."

"Weather is not my fault."

"The coat was absolutely your fault."

He laughed.

The final chandelier light remained glowing over table eleven.

I looked at him, then at the room.

No one had made me important by walking through that door.

They had only finally been forced to see that I already was.

I lifted my glass.

"To Anna."

Gabriel lifted his.

"To Anna."

And this time, when the ice clicked, I heard no laughter at all.

Only us.
