Chapter 3 - Only a Waitress

Gabriel’s gaze settled on the overturned Coca-Cola glass.
“Who did it?”
I felt every eye in the room swing toward Preston.
He stood abruptly.
“It was a joke.”
Gabriel looked at him.
Preston immediately lowered his voice.
“A stupid joke.”
My husband took one step forward.
Preston stepped backward.
And there it was.
The moment I had feared from the second Gabriel walked through those doors.
Not because Gabriel would lose control.
Because he almost never did.
Because when Gabriel Kane decided someone was his enemy, he did not need to shout, threaten, or throw punches.
He simply removed every door they expected to open tomorrow.
I touched his wrist.
He looked down at my hand.
“Don’t,” I whispered.
A murmur went through the room.
Gabriel’s eyes returned to mine.
“Don’t what?”
“Become the story they expect you to become.”
His face went still.
I could feel Preston watching us.
So could everyone else.
I stepped closer.
“If you destroy him because I’m your wife, then he learns the wrong lesson.”
Gabriel said nothing.
“He needs to understand that what he did was wrong when he thought I was only a waitress.”
The word only hung in the room.
Madison lowered her eyes.
One of the servers near the kitchen covered her mouth.
Preston’s face reddened.
“I already apologized.”
“No,” I said. “You became frightened.”
“That’s the same thing tonight.”
“No. It isn’t.”
He looked toward David.
“Tell them. David, come on. Tell them I was joking.”
David did not move.
Preston’s voice sharpened.
“David.”
That was when Madison spoke.
“He knew.”
Everyone turned.
She stood near the host stand, shaking so hard the reservation tablet rattled against her fingers.
David’s head snapped toward her.
“Madison.”
She swallowed.
“He knew they were coming.”
The room changed again.
Gabriel’s attention shifted from Preston to David.
Then Madison spoke, and the humiliation at table twelve turned into evidence.
