Chapter 20 - Table Eleven

Reopening night smelled like lemon polish, garlic, wine, and nerves.
The chandeliers glowed.
The marble had been repaired.
The violinist returned because, as he told me, "I want to finish the song those idiots interrupted."
Madison wore a black suit instead of a hostess dress.
Director of guest services.
Luis ran the kitchen.
Marcus carried a clipboard and terrified every new server with kindness disguised as standards.
At seven thirty, Gabriel arrived alone.
No security inside.
No charcoal suit.
Dark trousers.
White shirt.
The expression of a husband who knew his wife would throw him out if he intimidated her staff.
Madison greeted him at the stand.
"Reservation?"
He stared at her.
She kept a perfectly straight face.
"Name?"
"Gabriel Kane."
She tapped the tablet.
"I'm sorry, sir. Your table isn't ready."
I nearly choked laughing behind the bar.
Gabriel looked over her shoulder at me.
"You trained her."
"She was always talented."
Ten minutes later, I led him to table eleven.
Not twelve.
Eleven.
He sat.
I remained standing with an order pad.
"What can I bring you?"
His eyes narrowed.
"Absolutely not."
"What?"
"You are not serving me on opening night."
"I own one twelfth of this place. I can do whatever I want."
"That is not how ownership works."
"It is tonight."
He leaned back.
"Fine."
I lifted the pad.
"What would you like?"
He studied me.
Then his expression softened.
"Coca-Cola."
The entire staff within hearing distance went silent.
Gabriel realized what he had said.
Madison burst out laughing first.
Then Luis from the kitchen doorway.
Then Marcus.
I laughed so hard I had to grip the chair.
Gabriel covered his face.
"Water."
"No."
I wiped my eyes.
"You are absolutely getting the Coke."
When I brought it, I placed the glass carefully in front of him.
Ice clicked against the side.
For one heartbeat the old room returned.
Cold soda beneath my collar.
Laughter at table twelve.
David looking away.
Preston's hand around my wrist.
Then the memory moved.
Gabriel's coat around my shoulders.
Madison's shaking voice.
My own voice telling the officer yes.
The present returned.
Gabriel lifted the glass.
"To my wife."
I shook my head.
He paused.
I raised my own glass.
"To Anna."
Something moved behind his eyes.
Then he smiled.
"To Anna."
The ice clicked again.
This time it sounded ordinary.
That was the miracle I wanted.
Not forgetting.
Not pretending.
Just giving an old sound a new place to live.
