Chapter 15 - The People Behind the Room

The Imperial Room had looked flawless because people were paid to make damage invisible.

The labor records showed how much of that damage belonged to the staff.

Unpaid closing time.

Tip deductions disguised as breakage fees.

Uniform charges.

Mandatory meetings off the clock.

Complaints about wealthy guests that vanished after managers promised to "handle it."

My Coke incident had been spectacular enough to become public.

The quieter abuses were older.

I sat with Priya in a conference room while Luis explained that he had worked through two finger injuries because the kitchen manager warned him workers' compensation claims would reduce his hours.

Madison described reporting her ex when he began waiting outside and being told to use the employee exit instead of "bringing drama through the lobby."

Marcus admitted he had covered shifts for younger servers after men followed them into the parking garage.

I felt sick.

I had worked beside all of them.

I had believed I was observant.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?" I asked.

Luis gave me a tired smile.

"You were surviving too."

The answer stayed with me.

David eventually gave a formal deposition.

He admitted participating in wage violations before Roland ever paid him.

That mattered.

His financial desperation explained how he became useful to Hale.

It did not explain the years before that.

When I saw him again, he looked at me and said, "I keep wanting one bad choice to explain all the others."

"It doesn't."

"I know."

"Good."

I was learning that accountability was less satisfying than revenge in the moment and more useful afterward.

Revenge gives you a clean villain.

Accountability keeps asking who signed what, who ignored what, who benefited, and who decided silence was cheaper.

The restaurant's parent company entered settlement talks with the workers.

Then something unexpected happened.

They announced The Imperial Room would close permanently.

The building owner planned to replace it with luxury retail.

Madison cried when she heard.

Luis swore for almost a full minute.

Marcus stared at the floor.

I surprised myself by feeling grief.

The room where I had been humiliated was also where Madison had called for help.

Where Luis had spent fourteen years.

Where weddings, proposals, birthdays, and ordinary Tuesday dinners had happened beneath the chandeliers.

A bad owner does not make every memory inside a building bad.

That night, I told Gabriel.

"Buy it," he said.

I stared at him.

"No."

"You just said you don't want it turned into a handbag store."

"That does not mean you buy me a restaurant."

"I wouldn't buy it for you."

"You would buy it near me, which is the same problem wearing a better suit."

He rubbed his forehead.

"Sometimes being married to you is exhausting."

"Good. Builds character."

He smiled despite himself.

Then he said, "What if you bought it?"

I laughed.

He did not.

"With what?"

"A business plan. Investors. Financing."

"And your money."

"Not if you don't want it."

I stopped laughing.

The idea was absurd.

Then it became less absurd.

I called Priya.

She called a cooperative finance group.

Luis knew food operations.

Madison knew guests.

Marcus knew training.

I knew exactly what the room felt like from the floor up.

Within three weeks, twelve former employees were sitting around a folding table arguing about ownership percentages.

Gabriel was not in the room.

That was my rule.

The bank rejected us the first time.

Then the second.

On the third application, the loan officer looked at our projected labor costs and said, "You're paying too much."

Luis leaned forward.

"No. Everybody else is paying too little."

The officer blinked.

I knew then that if we ever opened those doors again, it would not be because Gabriel Kane had saved us.

It would be because twelve people who had been treated as replaceable decided to own the place that had taught them otherwise.
