Chapter 7 - The Evidence

Ethan told her everything.
The surveillance footage.
The recordings.
The witness statements.
He had been building a case against Veronica for months.
He knew about her crimes.
He knew about her plans.
He knew about her associates.
"Why didn't you tell me this before?" Clara asked.
"Because I needed to make sure I had enough evidence."
"You waited until she was about to be convicted?"
"Yes. That's when the case is strongest."
"Ethan, what if she finds out?"
"She won't."
"How do you know?"
"Because no one knows."
"Not even your lawyers?"
"No. They don't know the full extent of the evidence."
"Ethan, that's dangerous."
"I know. But I needed to keep it safe."
"How?"
"It's in a vault. A secret vault."
"Where?"
"I can't tell you."
"Ethan, you promised."
"I know. I can't tell you, Clara. Not until the trial is over."
"Ethan, if something happens to you, no one will know where the evidence is."
"Nothing's going to happen to me."
"You don't know that."
"Clara, I promise you. Nothing is going to happen to me."
---
The days passed slowly.
Clara tried to relax, to enjoy the beauty of the cabin, to focus on the baby growing inside her.
But she couldn't shake the feeling that something terrible was going to happen.
Something was coming.
She could feel it in her bones.
---
One night, Ethan went out to get supplies.
He left at dusk and promised to be back within two hours.
Four hours passed.
Six hours.
Eight.
Clara called his phone, but it went straight to voicemail.
Her heart pounded in her chest.
Something was wrong.
May you like
She could feel it.
She called his phone again and again, but it kept going to voicemail.
