Chapter 10 - The Trial

Ethan and Clara flew back to New York.
Veronica was taken to a maximum-security prison, where she would spend the rest of her life.
The trial was quick.
The evidence was overwhelming.
Veronica was convicted and sentenced to life without parole.
The trial was over.
The nightmare was over.
But the fear remained.
Clara couldn't shake the feeling that Veronica still had allies.
People who would carry out her revenge.

Clara gave birth to a healthy baby boy two months later.
She named him Victor, after Ethan's brother.
Ethan held his son in his arms, and for the first time in a long time, he smiled.
"I promise you," he whispered to the baby, "I will never let anything happen to you. I will never let anyone hurt you."
"Ethan," Clara said, "we need to talk."
"About what?"
"About the future."
"What about it?"
"We can't live in fear forever."
"I know."
"We need to move on."
"I know."
"Ethan, I love you. But I can't keep living like this."
"I know. I'm sorry."
"We need to trust each other."
"I know."
"No more secrets."
"None."
"Promise?"
"Promise."
"Then we can move on."

"Together?"
"Together."
