Chapter 14 - The Rescue
The police arrived within minutes.
They took Veronica's body away.
Clara and Victor were taken to the hospital for a checkup.
They were both fine, just shaken.
Ethan sat beside Clara in the hospital room.
"I'm so sorry," he said.
"For what?"
"For everything. For bringing Veronica into our lives. For not protecting you better. For everything."
"Ethan, it's not your fault."
"Yes, it is. I should have seen what she was capable of."
"Ethan, nobody could have predicted this."
"I could have. I knew she was dangerous. I just didn't want to believe it."
"Ethan, you saved us. You saved Victor."
"I almost didn't."
"Ethan, you did."

The days that followed were quiet.
Clara spent time with Victor, trying to help him recover from the trauma.
Ethan spent time with the lawyers, trying to make sure that Veronica's associates were all brought to justice.
They both tried to move on.
But the fear remained.
Because even though Veronica was dead, her allies were still out there.
People who would carry out her revenge.

A month later, Clara received another anonymous letter.
She opened it, and inside was a single photograph.
A photograph of a woman who looked exactly like Veronica.
