# CHAPTER 8 ## THE FINAL SUBJECT

The message remained on the screen.

Red letters.

Simple words.

But they changed everything.

THE FINAL SUBJECT HAS AWAKENED.

---

I stared at the sentence.

My mind refused to accept it.

"Final subject?"

My voice was barely a whisper.

"What does that mean?"

---

Nobody answered.

Not Mateo.

Not Adrian.

And that scared me.

Because these men had faced guns, betrayal, and death without hesitation.

But those words...

Those words made them afraid.

---

I turned toward Adrian.

"You know."

He looked away.

"Adrian."

His jaw tightened.

"Tell me."

---

Finally, he spoke.

"Project Hart wasn't only about technology."

I frowned.

"Then what was it about?"

---

He looked at me.

"You."

---

The room went silent.

---

I laughed once.

A nervous, broken sound.

"No."

"That's impossible."

---

Adrian stepped closer.

"Your father was researching how the human body responds under extreme conditions."

"Trauma."

"Pain."

"Stress."

"Recovery."

---

I nodded slowly.

"I know."

"No."

His voice became serious.

"He wasn't studying patients."

"He was studying you."

---

The words hit me.

---

"My entire life?"

I whispered.

"Was an experiment?"

---

Adrian didn't answer.

Because he didn't need to.

---

I stepped back.

Every memory suddenly felt different.

Every childhood illness.

Every medical test.

Every time my father watched me too closely.

---

"No."

I shook my head.

"My father loved me."

"He did."

Adrian answered immediately.

"That was the problem."

---

I looked at him.

"What?"

---

"He loved you so much that he changed the entire project."

---

Adrian walked toward an old computer terminal.

He inserted the flash drive recovered from the laboratory.

A hidden folder appeared.

---

PROJECT HART — ORIGINAL PURPOSE

---

The file opened.

Inside were hundreds of medical records.

Not experiments.

Observations.

My heartbeat.

My recovery rate.

My immune response.

My nervous system.

---

I covered my mouth.

"Why?"

---

Adrian looked at the screen.

"Because your father discovered something rare."

---

"What?"

---

"Your body adapts differently."

---

I frowned.

"That sounds impossible."

---

"It does."

Adrian said.

"That's why people wanted it."

---

He explained.

My father discovered that my body had an unusual ability to recover from certain injuries faster than expected.

Not magic.

Not superhuman.

But different.

A rare biological response.

Something that could change medicine forever.

---

"The original goal was to create treatments."

Adrian said.

"But Kessler changed it."

---

I looked at him.

"Into what?"

---

"A weapon."

---

Silence.

---

Kessler didn't want to heal people.

He wanted control.

A way to create soldiers who could survive things ordinary humans couldn't.

A way to own something nobody else had.

---

"And me?"

I whispered.

"You were the first successful case."

Adrian said.

---

I felt sick.

---

"No."

I shook my head.

"I'm not a case."

---

Adrian looked directly at me.

"No."

His voice softened.

"You're not."

---

A strange emotion crossed his face.

Anger.

Not at me.

At the people who had done this.

---

"They took your childhood."

"They took your father."

"They took your choice."

---

A pause.

"But they don't get to take you."

---

Before I could answer...

The computer suddenly flashed.

Incoming connection.

---

Everyone turned.

A video appeared.

Dr. Kessler.

---

"Hello, Emma."

His voice was calm.

Almost friendly.

---

"You must have questions."

I stared at the screen.

"You kidnapped my father."

Kessler smiled.

"Your father made choices."

"He chose to run."

"He chose to hide you."

"He chose to waste the greatest discovery in human history."

---

"You mean me."

---

"Yes."

---

My hands tightened.

"You don't own me."

---

Kessler laughed.

"That's exactly what Henry said."

---

The screen changed.

Another video.

My father.

---

But this time...

He wasn't young.

He wasn't afraid.

He was older.

Weak.

Sitting in a dark room.

---

"Emma..."

His voice broke.

---

I froze.

"That's him."

---

My father looked into the camera.

"If you're seeing this..."

"Then Kessler failed to stop you."

---

Tears filled my eyes.

---

"I need you to know something."

---

He took a breath.

"Your life was never an experiment."

---

A pause.

---

"You were my daughter first."

---

I covered my mouth.

---

"Everything I did..."

"Every secret I kept..."

"Every lie I told..."

"Was because I wanted you to have a life outside of this."

---

The recording continued.

---

"But there is one thing I never told you."

---

The screen flickered.

---

"The reason Kessler can never recreate what happened..."

"Is because the project was never complete."

---

Adrian leaned closer.

"What?"

---

My father's face became serious.

---

"Emma is not the final subject."

---

Everyone froze.

---

"She is the key."

---

The recording ended.

---

No one spoke.

---

Then Mateo checked his phone.

His face changed.

---

"Boss."

Adrian turned.

"What?"

---

Mateo showed him the screen.

A news alert.

---

BREAKING NEWS: DESERT MERCY HOSPITAL ATTACKED. MULTIPLE CASUALTIES REPORTED.

---

I stared.

"Kessler."

---

Adrian nodded.

"He created a distraction."

---

"For what?"

---

Then every screen in the laboratory turned on.

A live countdown appeared.

---

PROJECT HART FINAL PHASE

02:59:59

---

My blood ran cold.

---

"What is happening?"

---

Adrian looked at the timer.

His face became completely serious.

---

"Kessler isn't trying to kill you."

---

A pause.

---

"He's trying to activate you."

---

I looked at him.

"What does that mean?"

---

Adrian reached for his weapon.

"The final phase requires one thing."

---

"What?"

---

His eyes met mine.

---

"Your body."

---

The laboratory doors suddenly locked.

Red lights flashed.

Gas began filling the room.

---

Mateo shouted:

"We're trapped!"

---

I looked at Adrian.

For the first time...

I saw something I never expected.

Fear.

Not for himself.

For me.

---

"Emma."

His voice was urgent.

"If anything happens..."

---

I interrupted him.

"No."

---

He stopped.

---

"I am done being protected."

---

I looked at the countdown.

Two hours.

Fifty-nine minutes.

---

Then I said the words that changed everything:

"Let's finish what my father started."

---

And somewhere deep beneath Desert Mercy Hospital...

May you like

A machine that had been waiting twenty years...

Started turning on.
