# CHAPTER 4 ## THE DOCTOR WHO WANTED THE MAFIA BOSS DEAD

I didn't sleep that night.

Not because of the threat.

Not because someone had just promised to kill me.

But because one thought kept repeating in my mind.

Dr. Warren Kessler.

The man who taught me.

The man who signed my first recommendation letter.

The man who looked me in the eyes and said I had a future in medicine.

The same man who might have tried to kill Adrian Vale.

---

At 7:00 a.m., I returned to Desert Mercy Hospital.

I almost turned around at the entrance.

Every person walking through the lobby suddenly looked suspicious.

Every hallway felt different.

Every security camera made me wonder who was watching.

Yesterday, this place was my workplace.

Today...

It felt like a crime scene.

---

I found Dr. Kessler in his office.

He was reviewing patient files.

Calm.

Normal.

Almost too normal.

"Emma."

He looked up.

"You look exhausted."

I stood in the doorway.

"Long night."

He smiled.

"That happens in trauma."

I watched his face carefully.

Looking for something.

Anything.

Fear.

Guilt.

A reaction.

Nothing.

---

"Doctor."

He closed the file.

"Yes?"

"Why did you declare Adrian Vale dead?"

The room became quiet.

Only for a second.

But I noticed.

---

"Because he was dead."

"No."

My voice was steady.

"He wasn't."

His expression hardened.

"You are a nurse, Emma."

"I know."

"And I am a surgeon."

"I know."

"Then don't question my medical judgment."

---

I almost backed down.

Almost.

Because that was the old me.

The nurse who respected titles.

The nurse who believed people in authority always knew better.

But Adrian's face appeared in my mind.

A dead man who wasn't dead.

A patient everyone gave up on.

Except me.

---

"You missed the signs."

I said.

Dr. Kessler slowly stood.

"What signs?"

"Tension pneumothorax."

"Cardiac tamponade."

"Residual neurological activity."

His face became colder.

"You think you know better than me?"

"No."

I looked at him.

"I think you knew exactly what you were doing."

---

For the first time...

His calm expression cracked.

Only slightly.

But enough.

---

"You should be careful, Emma."

His voice lowered.

"Curiosity can destroy careers."

I stared at him.

"Is that a threat?"

"No."

He smiled.

"Advice."

---

But I knew the difference.

---

That afternoon, Adrian's men arrived at the hospital.

Not aggressively.

Not with weapons.

Just quietly.

Like they owned every hallway.

Which, judging by the way people reacted...

Maybe they did.

---

Adrian was sitting in a private recovery room.

He looked better.

Not healthy.

But alive.

When I entered, his eyes immediately found mine.

"You went back."

I nodded.

"To investigate."

His expression changed.

"Why?"

I frowned.

"Because someone tried to kill you."

"That happens."

I stared.

"That is not a normal answer."

For a second...

I saw something almost like amusement.

"You have a strange habit of treating dangerous situations like problems to solve."

"And you have a strange habit of accepting people trying to murder you."

---

A small silence.

Then, unexpectedly...

Adrian smiled.

Just slightly.

The first real emotion I had seen from him.

---

"I found something."

He pushed a folder toward me.

Inside were security reports.

Hospital access records.

Employee logs.

---

"Dr. Kessler."

I whispered.

Adrian nodded.

"He accessed my medical file before I arrived."

I looked closer.

"That doesn't prove he tried to kill you."

"No."

He pointed to another document.

"This does."

---

A payment record.

An offshore transfer.

A large amount.

Sent to Dr. Kessler.

The day before Adrian was attacked.

---

My stomach tightened.

"Who paid him?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Instead, he turned another page.

A company name appeared.

Phoenix Medical Solutions.

---

I frowned.

"Never heard of it."

"You should have."

"Why?"

Adrian looked at me.

"Because it owns this hospital."

---

I froze.

"What?"

"Desert Mercy."

He tapped the document.

"The trauma center."

"The emergency department."

"The entire hospital network."

---

I stared at the papers.

"Someone inside the hospital wanted you dead."

Adrian nodded.

"Yes."

"And they had access to everything."

"Yes."

---

A terrible thought entered my mind.

"If they knew you survived..."

Adrian's expression became serious.

"They know."

---

At that exact moment...

The hospital lights went out.

Again.

---

The room became dark.

A backup alarm started.

Then every screen in the hospital turned on.

A message appeared.

Not a warning.

Not a threat.

A name.

---

EMMA HART

---

My blood froze.

"What is that?"

Adrian immediately stood.

Too quickly.

Pain crossed his face.

But he ignored it.

"Someone wants you involved."

---

The message changed.

A video started playing.

Security footage.

From six months earlier.

Before I graduated nursing school.

Before Adrian arrived.

Before any of this.

---

The video showed a young nursing student.

Me.

Walking through the hospital.

Then a man appeared behind me.

Someone I didn't recognize.

He handed a folder to a hospital executive.

The executive opened it.

Inside was my photograph.

---

Then words appeared on the screen:

SUBJECT IDENTIFIED: EMMA HART

STATUS: PREPARE CONTINGENCY

---

I looked at Adrian.

"What does that mean?"

For the first time...

He didn't answer immediately.

---

Because Adrian Vale...

The man who feared nothing...

Looked genuinely disturbed.

---

"Emma."

His voice became quiet.

"They weren't waiting for me."

I stared.

"Then who were they waiting for?"

---

He looked at the screen.

At my name.

At my picture.

And said:

"They were waiting for you."

---

The room went silent.

Because suddenly...

The question was no longer:

Who tried to kill Adrian Vale?

May you like

The real question was:

Why was a young nurse like me part of their plan from the beginning?
