# CHAPTER 3 ## THE NURSE WHO BECAME THE ONLY WITNESS

The first gunshot changed everything.
The sound was deafening.
The hospital room that had been filled with machines, doctors, and quiet panic suddenly became a battlefield.
The man in the doorway fired again.
But this time...
Adrian moved.
Barely.
His body was still weak.
His wounds were still fresh.
But his instincts were faster than his pain.
He grabbed the metal IV stand beside him and pulled it down.
The bullet missed his chest by inches.
The glass monitor behind him exploded.
---
I froze.
Not because of the gun.
Not because of the chaos.
Because of what I saw.
A man who had just been dead minutes ago...
Was protecting me.
---
"Emma!"
Mateo grabbed my shoulder.
"Get down!"
I dropped behind the operating table as another bullet hit the wall.
The smell of smoke mixed with the sharp scent of disinfectant.
People were screaming outside.
Security alarms were blaring.
And somewhere in the middle of all of it...
Adrian Vale was standing between me and a killer.
---
"Who is he?"
I whispered.
Mateo didn't answer.
His eyes stayed locked on the attacker.
"Someone who shouldn't know Adrian survived."
That sentence bothered me.
"Why?"
Because the answer was obvious.
Someone had told him.
Someone knew Adrian was alive.
---
The attacker stepped closer.
Slowly.
Confidently.
Like he owned the hospital.
"Adrian."
His voice echoed.
"You should have stayed dead."
Adrian leaned against the table.
Blood was already soaking through his bandages.
But his expression didn't change.
"Caleb."
The man's smile widened.
"You remember me."
---
Mateo's face changed.
Not fear.
Anger.
"You."
The man laughed.
"Still loyal after all these years, Mateo?"
I looked between them.
"You know him?"
Mateo's jaw tightened.
"He used to work for Adrian."
---
Used to.
That was the word that mattered.
---
Caleb lowered his weapon slightly.
"You know what your problem always was, Adrian?"
"You trusted people."
He smiled.
"And people always disappoint you."
---
Adrian stared at him.
"Who sent you?"
Caleb laughed.
"You still think this is about money?"
A pause.
"It's bigger than that."
---
Then the hallway lights went out.
Complete darkness.
For two seconds...
Nobody moved.
Then emergency lights turned on.
Red.
Flashing.
Terrifying.
---
When the lights returned...
Caleb was gone.
---
Everyone stood frozen.
Mateo immediately checked the hallway.
"He's gone."
Adrian's expression became darker.
"No."
He looked toward the security cameras.
"He wanted us to know he was here."
---
I stared at him.
"You're saying he could have killed you?"
"Yes."
"But he didn't?"
Adrian looked at me.
"Because he wanted me scared."
---
That was the moment I understood.
This wasn't a random attack.
It was a message.
Someone wanted Adrian alive.
But only long enough to suffer.
---
Minutes later, police arrived.
But something felt strange.
Nobody questioned Mateo.
Nobody questioned the armed men.
Nobody questioned why a mafia boss was lying in a hospital room surrounded by weapons.
Everyone acted like this was normal.
---
Because maybe in Phoenix...
It was.
---
A detective entered the trauma room.
Her name was Olivia Reyes.
She looked around.
Then looked directly at Adrian.
"Mr. Vale."
Adrian said nothing.
She turned to me.
"And you are?"
"Emma Hart."
She studied me.
"You were the nurse who saved him."
I nodded.
---
She looked at the medical chart.
Then at Adrian.
"Do you know what you did?"
I frowned.
"I saved a patient's life."
She lowered her voice.
"No."
"You saved a man that half this city wants buried."
---
I didn't answer.
Because I already knew.
---
Before leaving, Detective Reyes stopped beside me.
"Miss Hart."
"Yes?"
She looked serious.
"Be careful."
"Why?"
Her eyes moved toward Adrian.
"Because men like Adrian Vale don't forget favors."
A pause.
"And they don't let people who save them walk away easily."
---
That night...
I thought I could return to my normal life.
Go home.
Sleep.
Forget everything.
I was wrong.
---
At 3:17 a.m...
Someone knocked on my apartment door.
I froze.
Nobody visited me that late.
I walked toward the door slowly.
"Who is it?"
Silence.
Then a voice.
"Emma."
My blood went cold.
Because I recognized it.
Adrian Vale.
---
I opened the door slightly.
He stood there.
Pale.
Weak.
Still wearing a hospital shirt.
"You shouldn't be here."
He looked past me.
"Neither should you."
I frowned.
"What does that mean?"
---
He handed me a small black envelope.
"Someone tried to kill me because you saved me."
I stared.
"What?"
He continued:
"But they didn't only attack me."
"They searched my medical records."
"They searched the trauma room."
"They searched for one thing."
---
"What?"
His eyes met mine.
"The person who saw the truth."
---
I swallowed.
"The truth about what?"
Adrian looked around the hallway.
Then whispered:
"About who actually tried to kill me."
---
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
A security image from the hospital.
A person walking into Trauma Room Three before Adrian arrived.
Someone who wasn't supposed to be there.
Someone wearing a hospital badge.
---
My hands started shaking.
Because I recognized the face.
---
It was Dr. Warren Kessler.
The surgeon who declared Adrian dead.
---
Adrian watched my reaction.
"You know him."
I slowly nodded.
"Yes."
"Everyone trusts him."
Adrian's voice became cold.
"That's why he's dangerous."
---
I looked at the photo again.
And suddenly remembered something.
The moment Dr. Kessler declared Adrian dead...
He didn't look surprised.
He looked relieved.
---
Adrian stepped closer.
"Emma."
I looked up.
"From this moment on..."
"You are no longer just the nurse who saved my life."
A pause.
"You are the only witness who can prove who tried to end it."
---
I wanted to say no.
I wanted to walk away.
I wanted my old life back.
But then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A distorted voice spoke.
"Miss Hart."
"Stay away from Adrian Vale."
"Or next time..."
A pause.
"We won't miss."
---
The call ended.
And for the first time...
I understood the truth.
May you like
I didn't save Adrian Vale from death.
I saved myself from being pulled into his war.
