# CHAPTER 7 ## THE LIE THAT SAVED HER LIFE

The words hit harder than any bullet.
"The person who betrayed your father was Adrian Vale."
For a moment...
Nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Mateo.
Not even Adrian.
---
I slowly turned toward him.
My heart was pounding.
"Is that true?"
Adrian didn't answer.
And that silence hurt more than a lie.
---
Dr. Kessler smiled.
"Look at him."
"Even now, he can't deny it."
---
"Shut up."
Adrian's voice was low.
Dangerous.
But Kessler only laughed.
"You always hated the truth, Adrian."
"Especially when it involves your mistakes."
---
I looked between them.
"Someone explain."
My voice shook.
"Right now."
---
Adrian stared at the floor.
Then finally looked at me.
"I knew your father."
I nodded.
"I know."
"I worked with him."
"I know."
His jaw tightened.
"But I didn't tell you everything."
---
The room felt smaller.
"Why?"
Adrian looked at me.
"Because the truth is complicated."
I laughed quietly.
"Everyone keeps saying that."
---
Kessler stepped closer.
"Let me make it simple."
He pointed at Adrian.
"Twenty years ago, your father discovered Project Hart was being used for illegal experiments."
"He wanted to expose everyone involved."
"But Adrian Vale stopped him."
---
I looked at Adrian.
"Did you?"
---
Adrian's eyes changed.
Pain.
Regret.
Something I had never seen before.
---
"Yes."
The word came out quietly.
My stomach dropped.
---
"You stopped him?"
Adrian nodded.
"But not for the reason he wants you to believe."
---
Kessler interrupted.
"Of course."
"Because Adrian always has an excuse."
---
Adrian ignored him.
"I stopped your father because he was about to walk into a trap."
---
I frowned.
"What?"
---
Adrian took a step forward.
"Your father discovered the truth."
"He found out who was funding Project Hart."
"He found out who was controlling everything."
---
"Who?"
---
Adrian looked at Kessler.
---
"Dr. Warren Kessler."
---
The doctor smiled.
"Convenient."
---
Adrian continued.
"Your father was going to expose him."
"But Kessler knew."
"He knew everything."
---
I looked at Kessler.
The man who taught me.
The man who guided my career.
The man who I trusted.
---
"So what happened?"
I asked.
---
Adrian closed his eyes.
"Your father asked me for help."
---
Twenty years earlier...
A younger Adrian Vale sat across from Dr. Henry Hart.
Your father.
A brilliant scientist.
A man who believed knowledge existed to save people.
Not control them.
---
Henry Hart placed a file on the table.
"These people are using my work."
He said.
"They're turning medicine into a weapon."
---
Adrian looked through the documents.
Names.
Companies.
Payments.
Kessler's signature.
---
"Expose them."
Adrian said.
---
Henry shook his head.
"It's not that simple."
---
Because Kessler had already prepared.
He had people everywhere.
Police.
Hospitals.
Government officials.
---
"He knows."
Henry whispered.
"He knows I found out."
---
Adrian looked at him.
"Then disappear."
---
Henry stared.
"What?"
---
"Make everyone believe you're dead."
Adrian said.
"Let them stop searching."
---
That was the plan.
A fake death.
A hidden identity.
A chance to survive.
---
But something went wrong.
---
Kessler found out.
---
"He tried to kill your father."
Adrian said.
"I tried to save him."
---
I stared.
"Then why did everyone think you betrayed him?"
---
Adrian looked away.
"Because I let them."
---
My anger rose.
"You let them?"
---
His voice became quiet.
"Because if Kessler believed I was the traitor..."
"He stopped looking for your father."
---
Silence.
---
I whispered:
"You destroyed your own reputation..."
"To protect him?"
---
Adrian nodded.
"And you."
---
My heart stopped.
"Me?"
---
"After your father disappeared, Kessler searched for you."
"He knew you existed."
"He knew you were his weakness."
---
Adrian looked at me.
"So I erased every connection."
"I made everyone believe I was the enemy."
---
I couldn't speak.
---
Kessler laughed.
"A beautiful story."
"But still a story."
---
He reached into his coat.
Pulled out a small device.
---
"Would you like to know what your father really thought of Adrian?"
---
He pressed a button.
A recording played.
---
My father's voice.
Older.
Tired.
Afraid.
---
"Adrian..."
"If you're hearing this..."
"Then I failed."
---
I held my breath.
---
"I know what you did."
"I know you took the blame."
---
My eyes widened.
---
"But you made one mistake."
---
A pause.
---
"You protected my daughter too much."
---
The recording continued.
---
"One day, Emma will find the truth."
"When she does..."
"Tell her this."
---
The audio became distorted.
Then my father's final words:
---
"Adrian Vale is the only person I trust to keep her alive."
---
The recording ended.
---
Nobody spoke.
---
Kessler's smile disappeared.
Only for a second.
But enough.
---
Adrian looked at me.
"I should have told you."
---
I stared at him.
"You should have."
---
A long silence.
Then I asked:
"Why didn't you?"
---
His answer was barely a whisper.
"Because every person who got close to me ended up dead."
---
That was the first time...
I saw Adrian Vale not as a mafia boss.
Not as a dangerous man.
But as someone who had spent his entire life losing people.
---
Then suddenly...
The laboratory alarm activated.
Red lights flashed.
---
Mateo looked at the security panel.
"Someone entered the facility."
---
Kessler smiled.
"You were so busy explaining the past..."
He stepped backward.
"You forgot about the present."
---
The door behind him opened.
Several armed men entered.
---
I looked at Kessler.
"You planned this."
---
He smiled.
"Of course."
---
Adrian moved closer to me.
"Stay behind me."
---
But this time...
I didn't.
---
I stepped beside him.
---
Because I finally understood.
I wasn't a helpless nurse caught in a dangerous man's world.
I was part of this fight.
---
Kessler watched us.
And for the first time...
He looked uncertain.
---
"Interesting."
He smiled.
"Maybe Henry was right."
---
I frowned.
"About what?"
---
Kessler looked at me.
---
"You're much more dangerous than your father ever was."
---
The lights suddenly went out.
A gunshot echoed.
Then another.
---
When the emergency lights returned...
Kessler was gone.
---
But something else was missing.
---
The Project Hart files.
---
And on the table...
A single message remained.
Written in red:
"THE FINAL SUBJECT HAS AWAKENED."
---
Adrian looked at me.
His face was pale.
---
"Emma."
"What?"
---
He whispered:
"They were never trying to find your father."
---
A pause.
May you like
---
"They were waiting for you."
