# CHAPTER 6 ## THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

The screen stayed black.

But my father's voice kept echoing in my mind.

"If you're seeing this... they already know who you are."

---

For twenty years...

I believed my father died.

A car accident.

A rainy night.

A phone call that changed my mother's life forever.

That was the story.

The only story.

But now...

He was alive.

---

"Emma."

Adrian's voice pulled me back.

I looked at him.

"How long have you known?"

The question came out before I could stop it.

His expression changed.

"Known what?"

"That my father was alive."

---

Silence.

A terrible silence.

---

"Adrian."

I stepped closer.

"How long?"

He looked away.

And that was my answer.

---

"You knew."

My voice cracked.

"You knew something about my family."

"Emma..."

"No."

I shook my head.

"Everyone keeps deciding what I can handle."

"My mother."

"My father."

"Dr. Kessler."

"Now you."

---

Adrian stood slowly despite the pain.

"I was trying to protect you."

I laughed bitterly.

"That's what everyone says."

---

For the first time...

Adrian looked hurt.

Not angry.

Not offended.

Hurt.

---

"I didn't know your father was alive."

He said.

"But I knew he was involved."

"In what?"

He looked at the Project Hart file.

"This."

---

I crossed my arms.

"Then explain."

---

Adrian took a breath.

"The world thinks I became powerful because I was ruthless."

A pause.

"But before I became Adrian Vale..."

"I was someone else's weapon."

---

I stared at him.

"What?"

---

"My father worked with your father."

The room became quiet.

"Your father created technology."

"My father created the network to sell it."

---

I froze.

"So our families knew each other?"

"Yes."

"But they weren't partners."

---

Adrian looked at the floor.

"They were enemies."

---

He continued.

"Your father wanted to destroy Project Hart."

"My father wanted to control it."

"And when they couldn't agree..."

"People started disappearing."

---

I whispered:

"My father disappeared."

Adrian nodded.

"And mine died."

---

The connection hit me.

"You think they killed both of them?"

"I think someone killed anyone who got in the way."

---

Before I could respond...

Mateo rushed into the room.

"Boss."

Adrian turned.

"What happened?"

---

Mateo placed a phone on the table.

"We found the location of the underground facility."

Adrian looked at it.

"Where?"

---

Mateo hesitated.

Then:

"Under Desert Mercy Hospital."

---

My blood ran cold.

"What?"

Mateo nodded.

"The hospital wasn't just treating patients."

"It was built over something else."

---

Adrian looked at me.

"Your father's research facility."

---

The place where I worked.

The place where I saved Adrian.

The place where everything began.

---

I stepped back.

"No."

My voice shook.

"I've worked there for six months."

"I walked those hallways every day."

---

Adrian looked at me.

"And they watched you every day."

---

That sentence broke something inside me.

---

An hour later...

We entered the restricted basement level beneath the hospital.

A place that didn't exist on any blueprint.

---

The security door required three different access codes.

One from the hospital.

One from Adrian.

And one...

From me.

---

I stared at the keypad.

"What?"

Mateo looked confused.

"Why would it need her?"

Adrian didn't answer.

---

I placed my hand against the scanner.

The machine activated.

A green light appeared.

IDENTITY CONFIRMED: EMMA HART

---

The door unlocked.

---

Nobody spoke.

Because we all understood.

I wasn't just connected to this place.

I was part of it.

---

Inside was a laboratory.

Old.

Abandoned.

But preserved.

Computers.

Files.

Photographs.

---

And on the wall...

A picture.

My father.

Standing beside a younger Adrian.

---

I turned slowly.

"You knew him."

Adrian didn't deny it.

"Yes."

---

"You met my father?"

"Many times."

---

My voice became cold.

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

---

Adrian looked at the photograph.

"Because your father made me promise."

---

"What promise?"

---

Adrian's eyes met mine.

"That if anything happened to him..."

"I would keep his daughter away from this world."

---

I couldn't speak.

---

Then we heard it.

A sound.

A computer turning on.

---

The old monitor in the corner flickered.

A video file appeared.

Automatically.

No password.

No code.

Just waiting.

---

The title appeared:

PROJECT HART — FINAL RECORDING

---

I pressed play.

My father's face appeared again.

Older.

Tired.

Afraid.

---

"Emma."

His voice trembled.

"If you are watching this..."

"Then I failed."

---

I covered my mouth.

---

"I spent my life trying to keep you away from my work."

"I wanted you to have a normal life."

---

He looked directly at the camera.

"But there is something you need to know."

---

A pause.

---

"Adrian Vale was never your enemy."

---

I looked at Adrian.

He froze.

---

My father's voice continued:

"He was the only person who tried to save me."

---

The room became silent.

---

Then another sentence appeared on screen.

A file opened.

A list of names.

People involved in Project Hart.

---

And at the top...

The first name.

The person who funded everything.

The person who ordered the attacks.

The person who wanted Adrian dead.

---

I stared.

Because I knew the name.

Everyone knew the name.

---

DR. WARREN KESSLER

---

My heart dropped.

---

The man who trained me.

The man who helped me become a nurse.

The man who declared Adrian dead.

---

The man who had been controlling everything from the beginning.

---

Then the final line of my father's recording appeared:

"Emma, if Kessler finds you..."

"Do not trust anyone who claims they are protecting you."

---

The screen went black.

---

And behind us...

A slow clap echoed through the laboratory.

---

We turned.

---

Dr. Warren Kessler stood in the doorway.

Smiling.

---

"Very impressive."

He stepped inside.

"I wondered how long it would take you to find this place."

---

Adrian immediately moved in front of me.

Kessler laughed.

"Still protecting her?"

---

He looked at me.

"Emma."

A smile crossed his face.

"Do you want to know the truth?"

---

I stared at him.

"What truth?"

---

He walked closer.

"The truth about why your father disappeared."

---

A pause.

---

"He didn't run."

---

"He didn't die."

---

"He was betrayed."

---

Kessler smiled.

"And the person who betrayed him..."

---

His eyes moved toward Adrian.

May you like

---

"Was Adrian Vale."
