Chapter 7 - WHAT DNA COULD NOT DECIDE

The results took nine days.
Those nine days changed the house.
Margaret and I barely spoke.
Ryan sent the twins voice messages every night.
I played some.
Deleted none.
Vivian moved into a small rental and complained that I had abandoned her.
I stopped paying her expenses.
That part was legal.
That part was overdue.
On the ninth morning, Dr. Sethi sat across from Ryan and me.
Both twins were genetically mine.
Both were genetically Ryan's.
I closed my eyes.
Ryan began sobbing.
Relief hit me so hard I almost laughed.
Then Dr. Sethi continued.
The mislabeled sample belonged to another patient.
A woman whose treatment failed that same week.
The clinic had contacted her.
She wanted answers.
Her name was Leah Moreno.
She had spent six years believing her embryos had not survived.
Now there was evidence one sample had been stored under my file.
It did not mean her embryo had been transferred to me.
Testing proved my children were mine.
But it did mean the clinic's error may have cost Leah a chance at pregnancy.
Ryan whispered, "So we're okay."
I turned toward him.
"No."
He looked stunned.
The children were biologically ours.
Our marriage was still broken.
His unauthorized consent was still real.
His eleven months of secrecy were still real.
The forged loan application was still real.
Ryan looked at the floor.
"I thought this would fix something."
"It fixed one question."
Outside, a woman stood in the hallway.
Early forties.
Dark coat.
Hands shaking.
Dr. Sethi stood.
"Claire, this is Leah."
Leah looked at me.
Not at Ryan.
At me.
"I need to know exactly what your husband authorized that day."

And suddenly the fertility scandal was no longer only ours.
