Chapter 15 - MY OWN BAD DECISION

I had shut off the water.
I had shut off the electricity.
I had done it while angry.
The house was mine.
That did not make everything I did with it lawful.
The prosecutor did not charge me criminally.
But Vivian's attorney used the incident in family court.
They argued I acted impulsively when angry and used money as control.
The accusation made me furious because it was partly true.
I had paid for Ryan's life.
Then, in one swipe, I had tried to take it away.
Naomi said, "Own it before they weaponize it."
So I did.
In court, I said, "Turning off essential utilities was wrong. I restored them. I won't do it again."
Vivian's lawyer looked disappointed.
He had expected a fight.
The judge looked less impressed than I hoped.
Consequences did not disappear because I admitted them.
The court ordered both Ryan and me to complete a co-parenting program.
I wanted to protest.
I did not.
Ryan smirked outside.
"See you in class."
"Don't enjoy this."
"I have very little left. Let me have it."
I almost laughed.
We attended six sessions.
In the fourth, the counselor asked us to name one thing the other parent did well.
I hated the exercise.
Ryan went first.
"Claire makes the kids feel safe."
I looked at him.
My turn.
"Ryan plays with them without checking his phone."
He smiled.
That was all.
No reconciliation.
No music.
Just two useful truths.
Vivian began anger-management counseling as a condition for future supervised contact.
Margaret started occupational therapy and finally accepted a home aide twice a week.
She complained constantly.
Then adored the aide.
The clinic settlement talks moved forward.
Leah was offered enough money to change her life.
She called me.
"I think I'm taking it."
"Do you want me to tell you not to?"
"No."
"Then take it."
She laughed.
"You're getting better at this."
"At what?"
"Not deciding for people."
That evening, I crossed the street alone.
The old house was nearly empty.
Ryan had moved into an apartment.
Vivian was gone.
In the kitchen, I found a small dent in the cabinet.
The place where Margaret's face had struck.
I touched it.
Then I heard a key turn behind me.
Someone entered.
It was not Ryan.
May you like
It was my father.
