Chapter 16 - THE MAN WHO LEFT

My father, Thomas Hale, had been gone for twenty-six years.

Not dead.

Gone.

He left when I was nine.

Margaret told me he had chosen another life.

That was mostly true.

He stood in the kitchen holding a grocery bag.

Older.

Thinner.

Still recognizable.

"What are you doing here?"

"Margaret called me."

I laughed.

Of course she had another secret.

"Why?"

"She thought you might sell the house."

"What does that have to do with you?"

He looked around.

"I built the kitchen."

I stared at him.

This house had belonged to Ryan and me for seven years.

Before that, it belonged to another family.

Thomas had worked construction.

He had renovated it decades earlier.

That was the innocent explanation.

Then he said, "There's something behind that cabinet."

I stopped.

He removed a loose trim piece.

Inside was an old envelope.

Margaret's handwriting.

Dated twenty-five years earlier.

She had hidden it while Thomas worked here.

"What is this?"

He looked ashamed.

"Divorce papers she never filed."

My parents had separated after Thomas gambled away money from the sale of Margaret's first parcel of land.

She told me he simply left.

He told himself she threw him out.

Both had edited the story.

Thomas had returned money over the years.

Margaret had secretly accepted some.

"Why hide this from me?"

"Ask her."

I did.

Margaret sat silently for a long time.

Then said, "Because you made me into a hero."

I felt something crack.

"I never asked you to."

"No. I let you."

She had sold land to help me through college.

True.

She had also used part of Thomas's repayments.

Also true.

She had allowed me to believe she had sacrificed alone.

"I liked being the parent who stayed."

That sentence was ugly.

Human.

Real.

I walked outside.

The mansion across the street glowed through the trees.

For months I had been uncovering everybody else's lies.

Now I had to decide what to do with one that had built part of my identity.
